Can I play PointsBet legally?

• Point spreads – Point spreads, or spreads, are wagers about the accuracy of PointsBet’s predictions regarding the eventual margin of victory in a game or match.
• Moneylines – Moneylines are bets regarding the eventual winner of the game, irrespective of the manner in which the victor prevails.
• Totals – Also known as the over/under, totals wagers are bets about the accuracy of PointsBet’s predictions regarding the combined number of points two teams will score in a game or match. The division of the points to be scored among the teams is immaterial to the wager.

However, all of the constituent wagers of the parlay – known as “legs” – must be chosen correctly in order for the parlay bettor to win. Even one mistake in a sea of correct predictions will cause the bet to be lost.
• In-game – In-game wagering is a form of proposition bet that asks similar questions about even smaller events in the game. It is common to see in-game options regarding the outcome of single plays within the game or short-term statistics that a player (or team) might achieve. In-game betting can raise the number of wagers available for a contest above 100, in some instances.

Points betting

We’d be remiss if we didn’t discuss PointsBet’s namesake wager. Few sportsbooks can boast that they have a style of betting all to their own, but that’s exactly what points betting is.

The opportunity for points betting occurs primarily within point spreads and totals wagers. There might be an occasional prop bet that fits the bill, but usually, it is structurally identical to a totals bet – just applied to a single athlete or some other smaller event.

For the standard forms of these types of betting, the magnitude of the difference between the estimate and the actual is irrelevant to the outcome of the bet. With points betting, the separation between the two numbers is quite critical.

Points bets do not come with the standard moneyline payouts. In fact, you don’t know what your payout or loss will be until the conclusion of the wager, because the amount of profit or loss is figured as a multiple of your bet. The factor by which your bet is multiplied, therefore, is the difference between the estimate and the actual outcome.

Here’s an example to illustrate:

• Team A is estimated to win its game over Team B by 5 points.
• You put $100 as a points bet on Team A. You expect Team A to prevail by more than 5 points.
• Suppose that Team A wins by 8 points. Since 8 – 5 = 3, you are now set to receive $300 in profit on your bet.
• However, suppose that Team A wins by only 2 points. Since Team A did not beat the spread, you lost your wager, and have to pay back to PointsBet the $300 of multiplied difference.

Needless to say, you can both win big and lose big with this type of wager. PointsBet has several safeguards in place to prevent complete disasters, but the truth is that losses can escalate quickly if you are a points bettor. 

Still, it’s a type of wager you won’t find elsewhere. It’s also quite fun if you want to up your blood pressure and take a shot at a big payout. If you can accurately predict a favourite’s blowout or an underdog’s outright win, you might find yourself getting an outsized payout on your money.

The good things about PointsBet Sportsbook

There are several things that we like about PointsBet Sportsbook. Although the app is solid, there are a few elements that stand out above the rest:

• Same-game parlays – PointsBet has a healthy offering of same-game parlays that you can use if you prefer to parlay wager with legs that are somewhat related to one another. The things PointsBet Sportsbook could improve

No app is perfect, and PointsBet certainly has a few areas that could be better. Here are some parts of PointsBet that could stand a bit of work:

• Points betting – Points betting is wonderful, but it’s not available in Ontario at this time. When points betting comes to Ontario, we will gladly rescind points betting as an area for improvement.
