The trades keep flooding in after the deadline, as the Flames have made a minor deal on top of their two bigger ones today. The team has shipped Jacob Battaglia to the New York Rangers in exchange for 23-year-old former first-round pick Brennan Othmann.
Battaglia has had a tough 2025-26
Once considered one of the team’s top forward prospects, Jacob Battaglia has had a rough D+2 season and has fallen in the team’s prospect rankings. Despite being a 19-year-old in a weakened OHL, the 2024 second-round pick has managed just 43 points in 58 OHL games this year. A disappointing total for a player who had 90 points in the OHL just last season.
Who is Brennan Othmann
Once regarded as a top prospect, Brennan Othmann has really struggled to establish himself since being drafted 16th overall in 2021. Now 23 years old, his days as a prospect are coming to a close. The former first-rounder has registered just one point in 17 games in the NHL this season, and 16 in 26 AHL games.
At this point, Othmann looks more like a career tweener than anything else. Perhaps the Flames can find a way to revitalize his career, but it doesn’t seem likely at this point, as he’s failed to ever build on his impressive 49-point season in the AHL back in 2024. If anything, this move should give the Wranglers a much needed boost at forward.
