A quick look at the Calgary Flames’ newest prospect in Jonathan Castagna

The Calgary Flames pulled off a blockbuster of a trade, acquiring five assets from the Utah Mammoth in exchange for veteran defenceman MacKenzie Weegar. Among those assets is prospect Jonathan Castagna, the newest addition to the Flames’ prospect pool.

Who is Castagna exactly, and where does he fit within the Flames’ future? Let’s take a quick look at the 20-year-old centre.

Who is Jonathan Castagna?

Castagna was drafted in the third round by the then-Arizona Coyotes in 2023. He has since been playing in the ECAC with Cornell University. This season, Castagna has put up respectable totals, being a point-per-game player with 14 goals and 32 points in 29 games.

During the 2023-24 season, Castagna was named ECAC Tournament MVP as he led Cornell towards an ECAC championship win. He also won another championship with Cornell last season. Per DobberProspects, Castagna is described as “an athletic, energetic center who’s an excellent skater with size”.

Why did the Flames specifically target Castagna?

It’s understandable if you had to look up Castagna’s name to figure out who he is, but the Flames see something in the big centre.

Flames GM Craig Conroy describes him as a player whom they’ve really liked and praised his competitiveness, work ethic and offensive abilities. It was also reported by Elliotte Friedman that Castagna was unlikely to sign an entry-level contract with the Mammoth, so including his rights in this deal made sense for them.

Castagna also adds to the Flames’ centre depth within their pipeline and will likely see action with the Wranglers next season as well. As for his ceiling, there is NHL potential there, but there’s no doubt that the competition is fierce.

Solid deal for the Flames overall

This trade came out of left field, but the consensus amongst Flames fans is that the team did pretty well here. They get three 2nds all in 2026, which allows for flexibility to potentially move up in the draft. Castagna is an intriguing prospect, and they get a player in Olli Maatta who can eat minutes and could be flipped later down the line.

If anything, this deal officially signals that the Flames are going all in when it comes to their rebuild. We’ll see what the future holds, but as of right now, the team seems to finally be heading in the direction fans have wanted for years.
