Calgary Flames 7 game check in: Embrace the pain

We return with out 7 game check in series, as we check in on what’s been going on with the Calgary Flames throughout this stretch.

With the Olympic break currently in progress, the Flames won’t be back in action till later this month. However, based on how their last few games have gone, it’s clear this team is starting to embrace their identity as a rebuilding team.

The highs

Approaching the Olympic break, the Flames managed to get some wins here and there, including a statement win versus the Edmonton Oilers in the Battle of Alberta. As the trade deadline approaches, the team is expected to call up more youth, and hopefully, they position themselves in a spot to get a top pick.

What fans are excited about is that it seems like the Flames are finally starting to realize the position they’re in, and they need to take advantage of it. They won’t be making the playoffs this season, so it’s time to make some space for the kids and to draft a potentially franchise-altering player.

The lows

The Flames received some unfortunate news as it was announced that Jonathan Huberdeau would be out for the remainder of this season due to him getting hip surgery.

It’s a major blow for the 32-year-old as his nightmare season continues to get worse. The type of hip surgery Huberdeau is expected to get is significant. Very rarely have players come back from a hip resurfacing surgery being able to play the same way they once were able to. Huberdeau finished this season with 10 goals and 25 points in 50 games.

The road ahead

Here are the next 7 games for the Flames:

Febuary 28th: @ LAK

March 1st: @ ANA

March 3rd: vs DAL

March 5th: vs OTT

March 7th: vs CAR

March 9th: @ WSH
