Flames Sunday Census: How do you feel about the rumoured Rasmus Andersson & the Boston Bruins trade?

Rasmus Andersson trade rumours looked all but over this morning as the Boston Bruins were reported by multiple sources to have put an offer in place that the Flames accepted. Despite what looked like a done deal, shortly after, more reports hit X that Calgary was still entertaining offers from other teams.

Boston had reportedly presented Toronto’s 2027 first-round pick, prospect Center Matthew Poitras and Defenceman Mason Lohrei.

The other clubs rumoured to still be in the mix are the Vegas Golden Knights and Dallas Stars, with Conroy reportedly giving teams until the end of Saturday to put their best offer forward. We wanted to know what fans thought of Boston’s proposed offer.

We asked, you answered.

What are your thoughts on Boston’s trade offer for Andersson?

We presented the poll below to our readers:

Homerun/Solid return

Roughly 20% of respondents to this week’s poll think Boston’s proposed offer of Toronto’s 2027 1st round pick, Poitras and Lohrei is a homerun. All things considered, I tend to lean in this direction myself. I believe the Flames could have gotten more for Andersson a year plus ago, but that’s irrelevant. At this time and point in the season, I think Craig Conroy could chalk this one up as an early win.

Poitras, a right-handed centre, is 21 years old from Whitby, Ontario. Poitras has played 66 career NHL games, scoring six goals and 26 points. Despite his short, injury-riddled NHL tenure, he has potential and, importantly, plays centre.

Lohrei is a 24-year-old defencemen the Bruins drafted 58th overall in 2020. In 55 games this season, the left-hander has potted six goals and 21 points with a +6 in 44 games.

The final chip, Toronto’s 2027 1st round pick, with a Brad Treliving trademarked laundry list of conditions.

All in all, really well done. Even if you don’t think it’s a home run, roughly 60% of fans who voted think the Flames would bag a “solid return”. I’d say that’s an overwhelming pat on the back for Conroy with a ~80% approval rating.

Could be better / Disaster

Roughly 15% of fans think Conroy could’ve done better, while 5% think the proposed return would be an absolute disaster. The Flames need Centre depth, and young ones at that. Poitras fills that role, but he’s not the top-of-the-line prospect you’d hope for. Even Toronto’s first-rounder is top 10 protected if I’m reading Treliving’s insecurity conditions correctly.

Moreover, Lohrei is solid, but we don’t need more defencemen right now. Granted, he’s a lefty, and both Parekh and Brzustewicz are right-handed shots. He’s a solid defenceman, but it would likely mean the Flames have to try and offload someone else down the road.

You certainly could be disappointed with the return reportedly coming Calgary’s way; however, with the circumstances of this season and all the off-ice noise, I think the situation appears to be panning out well.

The bar is set

Conroy has positioned the Flames relatively well with the little leverage he had left. It appears Andersson will depart Calgary on a high note, for a reasonable return. The Knight and Stars may still be in the mix, but Vegas is thin on future trade assets, and Dallas doesn’t have the cap room for an extension. Let’s hope the headline finally comes through today, and both the Flames and Andersson can move on.
