News this morning out of the Saddledome as the Calgary Flames have called up right-shot defenceman Hunter Brzustewicz from the AHL’s Calgary Wranglers.
Jake Bean is out day-to-day with an injury, which is why the Flames chose to recall Brzustewicz.
Brzustewicz deserves the call-up
For the Wranglers this year, he has had a phenomenal season amassing four goals and 12 points in 23 game, all while suiting up as the team’s number one defenceman.
Brzustewicz made his NHL debut in Game 82 last season logging two shots and a plus-two rating in 18:23 TOI. He showed he can play at the NHL level and will get another shot to prove that to the Flames coaching staff this week.
Brzustewicz will join Rasmus Andersson, MacKenzie Weegar, and Brayden Pachal as RHD options on the NHL roster.
Defence pairings are tough to gauge. Andersson and Kevin Bahl, and Weegar and Yan Kuznetsov have been solid pairings of late, so it’s likely we’ll see Brzustewicz slot in alongside Joel Hanley on the third pairing.
It’s also possible Brzustewicz gets time on the second power play unit.
