Calgary Flames

Calgary Flames among NHL’s worst in hat trick totals

So far in the 2025–26 NHL season, we have seen 25 hat tricks scored. Most recently, Connor McDavid put up a hat trick against the Seattle Kraken. Elite goal scorers are usually the players who get hat tricks, and whenever it happens, it is a special occasion. Think Auston Matthews, Connor McDavid, Connor Bedard, Jack Hughes, among many others. Players of this calibre have all scored hat tricks this year, and some have even recorded multiple in just this season alone. After seeing McDavid put up a hat trick, it got me thinking, when was the last time the Flames got a hat trick? Does it happen as often for the team as it does for others? Below, I dive into the numbers over the past five years. All data is as of December 5th, 2025.

It’s been a while

To put it simply, it has been a while since a Flames player has put up a 3-goal performance. In fact, the last time a Flames player put up a hat trick was in the 2023–24 season, where Andrei Kuzmenko scored three goals against the Ducks on April 12, 2024. That same season, Mackenzie Weegar and Yegor Sharangovich got hat tricks as well, bringing the team total to three that season.

The Flames are among only two teams that did not get a hat trick in the past two seasons, with the other team being the Detroit Red Wings.

How long has it been like this?

The Flames seem to be allergic to goal scoring, and it has been like that for the past two seasons. That’s not new information, and it may be part of the reason why we haven’t seen a hat trick in so long. But how do their numbers compare when we look over the past five seasons?

Since the 2020–21 season, the Flames are in the bottom three for total hat tricks scored, with just eight scored over the past five years. The only teams that have scored less than that are the New York Islanders with seven, and the Seattle Kraken with four.

We knew that the Flames lacked elite goal scoring and struggled to score goals in general, but to have these numbers back to years when elite players like Matthew Tkachuk, Johnny Gaudreau, and Sean Monahan were on the team is not pretty.

Who are the leaders?

The teams below lead the league in total hat tricks scored since 2020–2021

Almost every single team in this list has been (and in most cases still are) a Stanley Cup Contender during this stretch. The outlier in this case? The cursed franchise of the Buffalo Sabres. But there is no denying that every single team above has at least one elite goal scorer on their roster.

The table below shows the total number of hat tricks teams have scored over the past five years, ranked from most to least.

Calgary needs a star

Water is wet, the sky is blue, and Calgary needs an elite game-breaking player on their roster. Again, this is not new information for many who follow this team, but what may be new information to some is how long this has been needed and how much star power they are lacking. The team may be able to address this need at the upcoming 2026 NHL Draft.
