Calgary Flames Prospect Update: William Stromgren making his case for a call up

The calendar has now switched over to December, and the holiday season is almost here. The main gift many Flames fans want is a certain Penn State prospect, but for now, let’s settle with the ones currently in the system.

Welcome to the TWC Calgary Flames prospect update. Each week, we’ll take a dive into how the Flames prospects have done in their respective leagues to go along with a feature one one standout prospect in Calgary’s system. We have defined a prospect as a skater who has played fewer than 65 NHL games, and is born 2001 or earlier.

Let’s take a look at the past week for those players.

William Stromgren, F, Calgary Wranglers, (AHL)

Stromgren has played a solid top-six role for the Calgary Wranglers this season, and is on track for a breakout season in the AHL. If the momentum continues, it’s likely Flames fans could see the prospect in a handful of games this season.

Some Stromgren context

The now 22-year-old Stromgren was originally acquired by the Calgary Flames with the 45th overall pick in the 2021 NHL draft out of the SHL program for MODO. After the draft, Stromgren moved to the Rogle BK system in 2021–22, and then Bynas IF in 2022–2023 before eventually coming to Calgary.

Including the two games he played for the Wranglers in the 2022–23 season, Stromgren has appeared in parts of four seasons with the Wranglers, and has slowly shown some growth as he worked his way up the lineup.

For the 2025–26 campaign, he averages 16:41 of TOI per game and has posted 14 points across 17 games played.

The Stromgren scout:

The Swede plays a hard, competing playmaker’s game with the occasional power forward elements. This provides a unique combo of depth checking and scoring ability from the young forward. His game is highlighted by notable puck skills, a quality compete level, and moderate physicality/shooting.

Stromgren plays a pass-distributor game with a good motor, play engagement, and discipline that allows him to be active and willingly engaged in all three zones. Defensively, he displays a frequent active stick, decent defensive pressure exertion, and conservative positioning.

Offensively, he is a large playmaker with breakout facilitator upside around creative pass ideas, smooth(ish) passing ability, lane recognition, and decent finishing. He understands the importance of timing offensively and uses gaps effectively.

The Swede generates 1.11 scoring chances per game with this skillset. His shooting shows a quick release, solid leverage, shot selection, and puck placement, which also explains his 0.13 goals expected, along with his 1.94 shots per game.

All of that being said, Stromgren also has major drawbacks around his skating and senses. His skating possesses an awkward upright posture, a shorter stride/extension, and some serious power/acceleration issues. This means that Stromgren struggles with pace is often chasing plays more than contributing.

These skating issues pose real problems in transitional play as he can’t get effective angles or defensive pressure on the forecheck/backcheck, and he rarely produces enough separation speed to be any form of an offensive rush threat.

Stromgren struggles with pressure awareness, play processing/anticipation, and awareness, which means he can misread plays and struggle with higher-pace plays, especially defensively. This lack of pressure awareness explains why, despite his puck skills, he completes only 76% of his passes.

NHL Potential: Bottom 6 Forward.

Calgary Flames prospect updates

AHL

• The Wranglers played one game this past week, a 3–0 loss to the San Jose Barracuda on the 26th.
• Calgary sits fourth in the AHL’s Pacific Division with a 10–8–2 record.
• Matvei Gridin leads all Flames affiliated players in team points with 20 across 18 games.
• Sam Morton was reassigned to the Wranglers on the 25th.
• The AHL squad has a busy schedule this upcoming week with four games: a home game on December 3rd against Abbotsford, December 6th and 7th against Ontario, and December 9th at home versus Coachella Valley.

ECHL

• The Rush played a trio of games against the Idaho Steelheads this past week . They played games on the 26th (5–4 W), on the 28th (6–2 W), and the 29th (2–1 L), going 2–1-0 on the weekend.
• The Rush are now sixth in the ECHL’s Mountain division with a 7–9–2 record.
• Defender Etienne Morin was reassigned to the Rush on the 26th, and his first game back he posted a goal and assist in the game on the 28th.
• Arsenii Sergeev appeared in two games this past week, and had a solid week, his pacing, mobility, and anticipation are starting to adjust nicely to the professional ranks. He played a pair of games against Idaho, one on the 26th, and the second on the 29th. He posted a combined .925 across those games.

Europe

• Swedish U20 defender Jacob Leander appeared in a single game against Linköping HC U20 on the 26th, where he posted an assist in an 8–3 win. Much like Hurtig and Phillips, Leander is another old-school physical, defensive-oriented defender.

NCAA

• Mace’o Phillips is now the second most penalized player in the USHL with 68 PIMs. He appeared in three games this past week against: the Chicago Steel on the 26th, and a pair of games against the Sioux City Musketeers on the 28th and 29th. After sweeping the week, Green Bay is now on a six-game win streak.
• Eric Jamieson returned to action this past week with an appearance against the University of Minnesota on the 29th, which resulted in a 6–5 OT loss. Jamieson also posted an assist in 17:22 of ice time. This marks the first time he’s reached the 10-point mark in his NCAA career, which is even more impressive considering he’s relied upon more as a physical shutdown defender.
• 2025 fifth rounder, Ethan Wyttenbach, played one game against Stonehill College on the 29th and posted two assists in 17:33 of TOI. Wyttenbach has proven that his playmaking has adjusted to the pace of NCAA level, look for his vision, passing, and timing to be an asset as he continues his season.
• Flames first rounder Cole Reschny played Bemidji State University on the 28th and 29th. Across the two games, he posted four assists. Look for his three-zone game to elevate over the course of his career.
• 2025 first rounder Cullen Potter helped shut down Ohio State in men’s hockey with two goals and two assists for four points across two wins on the 28th and 29th.

WHL

• 2024 6th round forward, Hunter Laing, continues his breakout season this year, as the Blades star found the scoresheet twice in his second game of the week against the Edmonton Oil Kings on the 29th.

Russia

• Yegor Yegorov appeared in only one game this past week, a 2–0 loss to MHK Krylia Sovetov Moskva on the 1st. He played a solid game and showed good reaction time, stopping 34 of 36 shots.
• Kiriil Zarubin had a test infront of him this past week playing the 15–5–5 MHK Dynamo Moskva in a pair of games this past week on the 25th (2–1OTL) and the 28th (2–1W). He only conceded three goals on 62 shots he faced.
