Flames prospect Theo Stockselius will not compete in World Juniors due to injury

The Calgary Flames will have a lot of prospects vying to compete for their country at this year’s IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship (WJC). One of those players was 2025 second-round pick Theo Stockselius. Unfortunately, the top prospect was injured in October and has now been ruled out of the competition by his Swedish hockey club.

Stockselius is still rehabbing his injury

Stockselius is currently with the Djurgården system in Sweden, and has split time between the top SHL club and the J20 club.

On October 4, Stockselius made his SHL debut for Djurgården’s top team, logging seven minutes TOI in a fourth-line role. Four days later, he suited up for the J20 team and suffered a nasty skate-cut injury that has kept him out since.

This caused Stockselius to miss Sweden’s WJC training camp in Slovakia, and has now been ruled out for the tournament.

Djurgården’s sporting director Niklas Wikegård had this to say in the article from HockeyNews SE:

Pretty okay, I think. He got that nasty injury and after that he had to turn down the junior national team, which was unlucky for him. He is rehabilitating and slowly but surely getting better and better.

Stockselius’ timeline

According to the Calgary Flames, Stockselius is doing well rehabbing from the injury. He’ll spend the rest of the season playing in Sweden. Being 18 years old, Stockselius will be eligible to play for Sweden’s WJC next year.

Stockselius is viewed as one of the Flames’ top prospects. He has put up nine points in seven J20 games this season, and has played in two SHL games recording zero points so far. The 6’3″, 196lb centre projects as a middle-six centre at the NHL level, and will likely cross the pond in two or three years.
