This week, Dom Luszczyszyn of The Athletic put out his NHL Standings Projections, which take a look at how each NHL team is projected to finish this season. Not only are the Flames at the bottom, but their odds of winning the Stanley Cup are literally at zero.
What does it mean for the Calgary Flames this season?
Given the way the season started, it would take a miracle for the Flames to make the playoffs at all. The team would need to win nearly 70% of its remaining games to achieve this. This would mean going on a massive win streak for most of the rest of the season. Given their current roster, that doesn’t seem likely.
Even if they do sneak into the playoffs, the Flames would likely earn one of the two wild card spots. The Central Division is going to have a heavyweight clash, with one of the Dallas Stars, Colorado Avalanche, or Winnipeg Jets likely taking the top spot. The Flames would almost certainly struggle against any of them if they had to face them in the first round.
In the Pacific Division, the top teams have struggled, with the surging Anaheim Ducks currently holding the top spot. The Los Angeles Kings and Seattle Kraken are holding down the second and third spots in the division, but expect the Vegas Golden Knights and Edmonton Oilers to push for a spot. Do you really expect the Flames to get through any of those teams?
The 2004 Cup run was a fluke, and we all need to move beyond the thinking that “if they get in, anything can happen”. The NHL is stronger and more structured than it was 20 years ago, and this team isn’t strong enough to make an impact in the playoffs right now. The Calgary Flames’ Stanley Cup odds are dwindling. It’s time to rebuild.
