The Calgary Flames made a couple notable roster moves earlier today, placing veteran centre Justin Kirkland on waivers before re-assigning defenceman Daniil Miromanov to the AHL. The moves created some buzz as the Flames have dropped to 22 active players on their roster. There was speculation Zayne Parekh may be returning from injury ahead of schedule, but it appears the Flames will be adding Rory Kerins to the roster instead.
Rory Kerins deserves a shot
Fans have been calling for a Kerins recall call all season after he was placed on waivers at the beginning of the year. The 2020 seventh-round pick tore up the AHL last season, but has only seen five games of NHL action in his career thus far. Despite failing to make the NHL roster out of camp, Kerins has once again been dynamite for the Calgary Wranglers this year, leading the roster in scoring with 14 points in 13 games.
With the Flames sitting dead last in the NHL in goals and struggling to score almost every night, it was time for a change on offence. While he certainly isn’t a star player, Kerins carries offensive upside that a veteran like Kirkland just doesn’t possess, which makes this recall a no-brainer.
What’s next for Kerins?
The Flames are back in action tomorrow night as they face off against the red-hot San Jose Sharks, looking to snap a three-game skid. We’ll have to wait to see if Kerins jumps right into the lineup after his recall, but odds are he’ll find a home on the team’s fourth line ahead of the showdown with Macklin Celebrini and the Sharks.
