Calgary Flames Prospect Roundup: Late-rounders off to hot starts

With most Calgary Flames prospects now playing with their regular teams, the 2025–26 hockey season is now fully underway. Flames fans should continue to watch the NCAA, as many key prospects, including both 2025 Flames first-rounders, are off to a solid start.

Welcome to The Win Column’s Calgary Flames prospect update. Each week, we’ll take a dive into how the Flames’ prospects have done in their respective leagues and feature one standout prospect. We have defined a prospect as a skater who has played fewer than 65 NHL games and is younger than 25 years of age.

Ethan Wyttenbach, F, Quinnipiac University, NCAA

The Flames’ 2025 fifth-round selection is off to a strong start with Quinnipiac this year and serves as a higher-end middle-six forward within their lineup. The USHL alumni spent his draft year with the Sioux Falls Stampede, where, despite only appearing in 44 games, he finished second in team scoring.

The 5’10” forward plays a very strong two-way forward’s game, with a knack for playmaking. His overall game is highlighted by a strong, intelligent hockey sense, NCAA-ready shooting, and an evident compete level, highlighted by a noticeable motor.

Ethan Wyttenbach’s game is defined by his non-stop play support through high-end offensive/defensive awareness and timing. Wyttenbach shows strong positioning and, through this, combined with spatial awareness, manipulates and creates gaps on offence. On defence, his motor and angling are high-end.

He rarely takes a shift off in all three zones and controls pace quite well, with evident endurance, hustle, and intensity throughout. To blend with this compete and high hockey IQ, the American has a deadly shot with good deception, a solid release point, power, and good shooting mechanics.

There are two main drawbacks to his game: his skating and his physicality. His skating lacks in terms of stride cleanness, agility, and lateral acceleration, which means he is not the quickest player on the ice, but his positioning compensates for that in junior and NCAA.

His undersized frame and limited muscle mass make board play and some grittier elements of his game questionable at the next level. In order for him to make the pro-ranks, these are both elements that he will need to improve.

With his NCAA timeline, there is quite a high possibility that he can show significant growth. He likely projects as a middle-six forward at the NHL level if everything goes right.

Calgary Flames prospect updates

AHL

• The Calgary Wranglers have started their AHL season. They are off to a rough start with a pair of losses against the Colorado Eagles, with a 7–4 loss on October 10 and a 1–0 loss on October 11.
• Forward Rory Kerins continues to be a quality playmaking forward and leads Flames prospects with two assists. Owen Say was also a bright spot with a stellar 2021–22 save outing in the second game.
• Their next games are on October 18 and 19 against the Roadrunners.

ECHL

• The Rapid City Rush begin their season on October 17 on the road against the Kansas City Mavericks.
• Former NCAA standout goaltender and Flames 2021 seventh-rounder, Arsenii Sergeev, has been assigned to the Rapid City Rush.

Europe

• Theo Stockselius appeared in a single game this past week on the eighth against AIK U20, where his club secured a 1–0 victory. The playmaking forward demonstrated his playmaking ability with an assist.

NCAA

• USHL product, Mace’o Phillips had an eventful week, collecting a goal, eight shots, and 20 penalty minutes across just two games.
• Eric Jamieson started his NCAA season this past week, in a game against Air Force on October 10, followed by a second game against Bentley University the next day, October 11. He had a solid game against Bentley, scoring a goal and creating two assists, good for a 1.50 PPG so far.
• Henry Mews appeared in a handful of games against Providence College this past week and looks to slot in as a third-pairing defender with 17:04 of TOI in their game on the 10th and 16:45 in their second game on October 11.
• Trevor Hoskins played his second game of the season on the 10th, against UMass-Lowell, and had 13:53 of TOI, en route to netting a single goal.
• First-round pick Cullen Potter had an adjustment week to NCAA hockey. He appeared in two games this past week. ASU played the University of Notre Dame on October 10, and despite a 5–3 win, Potter remained off the scoresheet. He also played against the University of Alaska-Fairbanks the following day, another victory. Potter’s skating, senses, and compete still remain high-end.
• The 2025 fifth-rounder, Ethan Wyttenbach, is off to a hot start as the sniper’s shooting, timing, and play awareness continue to look stellar. He has posted four points across three games so far.
• Despite an injury scare, Cole Reschny remains a point per game in his early college season. He played two games this past week against the University of St. Thomas. His two-way game looks to have adjusted to the NCAA game quite well. Additionally, teammate and 2022 seventh-rounder, Cade Littler, looks to also be off to a hot start to his sophomore season with three points against St. Thomas this past week.

OHL

• Kingston Frontenacs captain and Flames 2023 second-rounder, Jacob Battaglia, lit the scoresheet up this past week with four points in his second game against the Peterborough Petes on October 10.

Russia

• 2023 sixth-rounder, Yegor Yegorov, had a solid past week in the MHL, appearing in two games, a 4–3 shootout win against Taifun Primorsky Krai on October 9, and a second 4–3 shootout win against Amurskie Tigry Khabarovsk on October 12. He stopped a combined 69 out of 75 shots, good for a .920.
• Kirill Zarubin allowed only three goals combined across two starts this past week, stopping 64 of 67 shots, good for a .955 save percentage. He continues to make a case for a promotion to the VHL this year.
