Young Calgary Flames Players Made Season Debut Against St. Louis Blues

The Calgary Flames seemingly fuelled their NHL season home-opener with some youthful athletes, but were still unable to secure a win. The game saw them go head-to-head against the St. Louis Blues, but in the end, they lost 4-2. Nineteen-year-old defenceman Zayne Parekh and twenty-year-old left-winger Samuel Honzek made their season debuts in this game.

The addition of fresh talent like these young men often helps give teams the edge over their opponents, and despite the overall loss, these young players were still seen to hold their own throughout the game. Although the odds were in favour of the St. Louis Blues this time, sports bettors who pay attention to roster changes like the ones that took place with the Calgary Flames are much more likely to see success on their bets.

The two new young players joined winger Matvei Gridin, who is himself only nineteen, in the Flames’ lineup at the Saddledome for the first game of the 2025-2026 season. This game took place after two road games, which successfully kicked off the season.

Zayne Parekh was the ninth overall pick by the Calgary Flames in the 2024 draft, whereas Samuel Honzek was a first-round selection back in 2023. Both players watched Calgary games from the press boxes in Edmonton and Vancouver before they were drawn in on Saturday.

The two young men are still incredibly new to the professional field, with Honzek having played five NHL games before this one, and Parekh having only one under his belt.  The two still managed to perform well despite their age and inexperience, and the game was tied 2-2 going into the third period. Speaking on the game afterwards, Parekh stated that it felt like a significant step forward for him.

Similarly, Matvei Gridin was the 28th pick by the Calgary Flames after Parekh. The young man was clearly the most comfortable of the three in this game against the St. Louis Blues, which is somewhat surprising because this was only his third straight NHL game. Although he had already scored during his NHL debut in Edmonton, so his had likely given him a boost of confidence heading into this game.

Parekh, a six-foot, 179-pound defenceman from Markham, Ont., was able to score his National Hockey League debut during the Calgary Flames’ regular-season finale last season. The young player recently stated that he felt some pressure to make the Flames’ lineup during his second NHL training camp. He talked openly about the nerves that hit him before this recent game, stating that he was even more nervous for it than he had been for his first. Despite the overall loss, Parekh had a decent game. During his 17:21 on ice time, he got four-and-a-half minutes of power play and managed to put one of his two shots off the post.
