Calgary Flames re-sign Justin Kirkland

The Calgary Flames have re-signed forward Justin Kirkland to a one-year deal worth $900K. “Costco” just set career highs this year, registering two goals and six assists for eight points through 21 games before suffering a torn ACL.

How did the Flames acquire Justin Kirkland?

The former third-round pick by the Nashville Predators spent several seasons in the organization with the Stockton Heat. He finally got his NHL break in Anaheim with the Ducks in 2022–23. However, this was a quick seven-game stint, and Kirkland spent the balance of that season in the AHL.

This season was his breakout, with him quickly becoming a fan favourite after getting the Flames the win in the Battle of Alberta and for his shootout heroics.

Kirkland was also named the Flames nominee for the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy. The trophy is given to those who exemplify perseverance, a dedication to hockey, and sportsmanship.

What’s next for Justin Kirkland?

While the Flames do have a lot of bodies on the wing, the hope is that Kirkland can retain his form from last year and slot in as a bottom-line guy with the team. He will likely lineup with Ryan Lomberg on the bottom line, with hopefully a new centreman between them.

He probably is not more than a bottom-line guy. However, the energy he brings to the lineup, along with his shootout prowess, is always valuable to this team.

All in all, Costco will be sticking around for at least another year. If his career has taught us anything, it’s that a torn ACL won’t stop him.
