Breaking: Flames re-sign Matt Coronato to a long term deal

Craig Conroy has wasted absolutely no time and crossed off a major task on his offseason to-do list. The Calgary Flames have re-signed Matt Coronato to a seven-year extension with a $6.5M AAV.

This is great news for the team and the fanbase as it is a clear indication that Coronato wants to stay with the team long-term. Coronato is one of Calgary’s most promising young players, and it is great news for the franchise to lock him up long term.

Coronato was scheduled to be an RFA this summer. He had a breakout season, putting up 24 goals and 47 points in 77 games this past season. He also went from a player who was sent down to the AHL to a player who is now a key fixture in the team’s top six.

This AAV should be considered a solid deal when you compare it to a player like Dylan Guenther. Guenther profiles similarly to Coronato and signed an eight-year extension with a $7.1M AAV. This is another piece of tidy work for Conroy as he continues building a solid team for the future.
