Calgary Flames Prospect Roundup: Brzustewicz, Poirier pick up two points apiece

This week’s Calgary Flames prospect roundup sees the end of the regular season in all leagues. Most of the Flames’ prospects around the globe are battling it out for their chance at a championship.

That said, the Calgary Wranglers had a pair of regular season games this week, while the CHL had begun its playoffs. Defencemen Hunter Brzustewicz and Jeremie Poirier had a pair of points each to pad their stats.

Let’s dive right in!

Welcome to The Win Column’s Calgary Flames prospect update. Each week, we’ll take a dive into how the Flames’ prospects have done in their respective leagues. We have defined a prospect as a skater who has played fewer than 65 NHL games and is younger than 25 years of age.

All data is from QuantHockey and EliteProspects. We also use an NHLe calculator built by Christian Roatis (@Croatis), which is used to estimate a player’s equivalent point total in the NHL based on how they are performing in their respective league. The calculator uses the difficulty of the given league combined with the ease at which a player puts up points to determine the NHLe.

Flames prospect happenings

AHL

  • The Wrangler’s scoring troubles continued right through the end of March. They played two games this week—posting a 0–2–0 record—and lost 8–2 and 3–1.
  • Despite a poor second half, the Wranglers are still in a position to secure a spot in the Calder Cup playoffs. They sit sixth in the Pacific Division with eight games to go.
  • Hunter Brzustewicz picked up two helpers this week to improve to 26 points in 63 games.
  • Jeremie Poirier had a goal and two points and is up to 36 points in 63 games. He also picked up a 10-minute misconduct penalty in Saturday’s loss. Take a look at this shot:
  • Goaltender Waltteri Ignatjew manned the crease Saturday, stopping 22 of 25 shots. He’s 11–8–3 on the year with a 3.47 goals against average and a 0.889 save percentage.

Europe

  • Blueliner Nikita Okhotyuk and CSKA Moscow are three games into their first-round matchup and are down 2–1–0 in the series.
  • Unison-Moscow failed to qualify for the VHL playoffs, meaning Daniil Chechelev’s season is done. It was not a good one, as he posted a 2–4–1 record with a 3.61 GAA and a 0.888 SV% through 11 games.
  • Krylya Sovetov lost their play-in series 2–1–0, including a 10–4 loss in the deciding game. Yegor Yegorov did not even suit up as a backup in this series, meaning his season comes to a quiet end. He posted a 7–10–1 record across 20 games in the MHL with a 3.14 GAA and a 0.904 SV%.
  • Kirill Zarubin and Mikhailov Academy qualified for the MHL playoffs. Their first-round series begins on April 3, 2025.

NCAA

  • Cade Littler and the University of North Dakota lost their National Collegiate Hockey Conference Frozen Faceoff semifinal matchup on March 21 to Western Michigan, who would go on to win the championship.
  • Aydar Suniev and UMass beat the second-seed University of Minnesota on Thursday before falling to the top-seed Western Michigan on Saturday to bow out of the NCAA Fargo Regional.
  • Netminder Arsenii Sergeev stopped 42 of 44 shots on Sunday to beat his old team, UConn, in the Allentown Regional. Penn State University has a Frozen Four date with Boston University on April 10.

OHL

  • The Ontario Hockey League playoffs are in full swing! The Brampton Steelheads are 1–1–0 in their first-round series against the Oshawa Generals, and Luke Misa has a goal and four points so far.
  • The Kingston Frontenacs are up 2–0–0 on the Sudbury Wolves, and Jacob Battaglia has contributed four helpers. Nice work by Bates on this one to set up his teammate:
  • Speaking of the Wolves, they’re 0–1–1 after Sunday’s double overtime loss. Henry Mews has just one assist in the series. He’ll have to start producing again if the Wolves hope to climb out of this hole.
  • Zayne Parekh and the Saginaw Spirit also find themselves in a hole, dropping the first two games of their series to go 0–2–0. Parekh has three assists at this point.

QMJHL

  • The Shawinigan Cataractes find themselves up 2–0–0 over the Val-d’Or Drillers, with Matvei Gridin having contributed a goal and five points. It would have been two goals if not for a save from the iron:
  • The Moncton Wildcats also lead their first-round series 2–0–0. Blueliner Etienne Morin has a goal and three points in the series so far.

WHL

  • Andrew Basha is still out, but the Medicine Hat Tigers are up 2–0–0 in their first-round matchup with the Swift Current Broncos.
  • The Calgary Hitmen are up 2–0–0 in their matchup with the Saskatoon Blades. Defenceman Axel Hurtig has contributed one assist for the Hitmen, while forward Hunter Laing has a goal for the Blades. Great shot by Laing here:
  • The Everett Silvertips split the first two games of their series with the Seattle Thunderbirds, going 1–1–0. Blueliner Eric Jamieson has a goal and two points in the series.
  • Two big losses put the Vancouver Giants down 0–2–0 to the Spokane Chiefs. Jaden Lipinski has a goal and two points so far.
