In what was a good week that saw several Calgary Flames prospects net a handful of points, it’s Saginaw Spirit defenceman Zayne Parekh and Brampton Steelheads centre Luke Misa who managed to steal the limelight. Parekh picked up another nine points, while Misa had eight.
Also worthy of mention is Niagara University forward Trevor Hoskin, who recorded five points this week. Over in the QMJHL, Shawinigan Cataractes winger Matvei Gridin had five of his own as well.
Another productive week is in the books; let’s take a look!
Welcome to The Win Column’s Calgary Flames prospect update. Each week, we’ll take a dive into how the Flames’ prospects have done in their respective leagues. We have defined a prospect as a skater who has played fewer than 65 NHL games and is younger than 25 years of age.
All data is from QuantHockey and EliteProspects. We also use an NHLe calculator built by Christian Roatis (@Croatis), which is used to estimate a player’s equivalent point total in the NHL based on how they are performing in their respective league. The calculator uses the difficulty of the given league combined with the ease at which a player puts up points to determine the NHLe.
Flames prospect happenings
AHL
- It was a winless week for the Calgary Wranglers. They went 0–0–2, dropping a pair of overtime decisions to the Ontario Reign.
- Joni Jurmo was sent to the ECHL to get some ice time, and he picked up three helpers in three games. He has 10 points in 12 games for the Rapid City Rush but is yet to record a point through 10 contests with the Wranglers.
- Leading goal-scorer Rory Kerins picked up three assists, improving to 39 points in 40 games.
- A trio of blueliners had just one point: Hunter Brzustewicz and Artyom Grushnikov each picked up a helper, while Jeremie Poirier scored his fourth goal of the year.
- No time between the pipes for Waltteri Ignatjew this week. He has a 9–4–1 record on the year with a 3.81 goals against average and a 0.878 save percentage.
Europe
- Nikita Okhotyuk picked up an assist for his eighth point of the year in the KHL. The CSKA Moscow defender delivered seven hits and added a blocked shot as his team went 1–2–0.
- Unison-Moscow struggled to a 0–2–0 week, scoring just one goal in the process. Netminder Daniil Chechelev saw 18 seconds of ice time in Friday’s 4–0 loss.
- Kirill Zarubin manned the pipes for Mikhailov Academy on Thursday, stopping 33 of 36 shots in a 3–0 loss. His team fared barely better than Chechelev’s, also going 0–2–0 but managing two goals.
NCAA
- Trevor Hoskin was superb for Niagara University, helping them to a 2–1–0 week with a goal and five points. He’s up to 36 points now in 31 games. Check out this nice feed:

- Aydar Suniev returned to action for UMass but was held off the scoresheet through two games. He still has 27 points in 25 games, but he was very productive before going down with an injury. Hopefully, he can get back to that level over the next couple of weeks.
- Penn State went 2–0–0 this week to extend their win streak to four games. Arsenii Sergeev was in net for both games—a back-to-back against Notre Dame on Friday and Saturday—and stopped 60 of the 65 shots he faced. He boasts an impressive 13–6–3 record with a 2.55 GA and a 0.916 SV%.
OHL
- Blueliner Zayne Parekh led the way this week, helping Saginaw to a perfect 4–0–0 record, even besting fellow high-scoring Flames blueliner Henry Mews. Watch as Parekh calmly and confidently quarterbacks this power play successfully:

- Parekh’s nine-point week brings him to an even 80 on the year in just 49 games, well ahead of last season’s 1.45 points per game, which saw him finish with 96. He’s tied for seventh in scoring in the OHL and leads all defencemen.
- Luke Misa’s eight-point week helped Brampton go 3–1–0. He now has 73 points and is tied with fellow Flames prospect Jacob Battaglia for 12th in scoring in the OHL. Wicked shot on this power play marker:

- Battaglia was quiet, with just one point in two games as the Kingston Frontenacs went 1–0–1. Last night’s game against the Barrie Colts was postponed due to inclement weather and travel conditions.
- The Sudbury Wolves struggled mightily, finishing the week with a paltry 1–3–0 record. Notably, they allowed seven or more goals in each of the losses. Defenceman Henry Mews picked up another five helpers to improve to 72 points on the year, good for 15 in the OHL and second among blueliners.
QMJHL
- It was a productive week for Matvei Gridin, who scored another two goals and five points in three games. Unfortunately, it did not translate to the win column, as Shawinigan went 1–1–1. Still, nice feed on this goal:

- The Moncton Wildcats put up a perfect 3–0–0 week, helped in part by a goal from Etienne Morin. He’s up to 44 points in 50 games now, which leads his team in points from the blue line by a margin of 20.
- Morin’s production this year has been something of a rollercoaster. He’ll have stretches of very productive play at or above a point per game, and then he’ll have stretches like this where he’s picking up a point every handful of games. It will be interesting to see how the smooth-skating defenceman transitions to pro hockey—likely with the Wranglers—next year.
WHL
- Hunter Laing was the Flames’ most productive prospect in the WHL this week, with two points in four games. The Saskatoon Blades were 1–2–1 but remain firmly in a playoff position in the WHL’s Eastern Conference.
- Vancouver Giants forward Jaden Lipinski scored just one point in three games, but his team won two of three. Lipinski now has 42 points in 45 games on the year.
- Everett Silvertips blueliner Eric Jamieson scored his ninth goal—28th point—of the year. Everett went 1–1–0, scoring four goals in the process.
- The Calgary Hitmen went 1–2–0 this week, and Axel Hurtig was held off the scoresheet. The shutdown defender does have a respectable 13 points in 44 games, though.
