Prospects

Calgary Flames Prospect Roundup: Trevor Hoskin earns Rookie of the Week honours

A big six-point week saw Niagara University’s own Trevor Hoskin earn Atlantic Hockey America’s Rookie of the Week honours. Congratulations, Trevor!

A few other Calgary Flames prospects had very productive weeks, too. I’ll start with Zayne Parekh—the Saginaw Spirit’s high-flying blue liner—who scored another hat trick to go along with five goals and nine points in just three games.

The Calgary Wranglers saw William Stromgren pick up six points while Adam Klapka had five. Over in the OHL, Kingston Frontenacs winger Jacob Battaglia recorded five points of his own.

There’s lots to discuss once again, so let’s get to it!

Welcome to The Win Column’s Calgary Flames prospect update. Each week, we’ll take a dive into how the Flames’ prospects have done in their respective leagues. We have defined a prospect as a skater who has played fewer than 65 NHL games and is younger than 25 years of age.

All data is from QuantHockey and EliteProspects. We also use an NHLe calculator built by Christian Roatis (@Croatis), which is used to estimate a player’s equivalent point total in the NHL based on how they are performing in their respective league. The calculator uses the difficulty of the given league combined with the ease at which a player puts up points to determine the NHLe.

Flames prospect happenings

AHL

  • The Wranglers were 1–1–1 this week. With Sunday’s overtime loss, the Wranglers hold an OT record this month of 3–1 with one game left to play this Friday.
  • William Stromgren was the catalyst up front. He had a pair of three-point games for six on the week and is up to 37 on the year. He’s now second in points on the Wranglers and quickly closing in on first, sitting just three back. Watch as he finishes this nice cross-ice feed:
  • However, the return of Rory Kerins could put a damper on Stromgren’s push for first. Kerins had an excellent five-game stint for the Calgary Flames, picking up four assists, including a multi-point effort in his NHL debut.
  • Winger Adam Klapka had a good week with points in all three games, including three on Saturday. He now has 25 points in 29 games and is closing in on the point-per-game mark again. Here he is showing why you go to the front of the net:
  • On the blue line, Jeremie Poirier continued his productive play of late. He picked up assists in each game, finishing with four on the week. He now has 25 points in 43 games. Remember, he and the Wranglers’ blue line as a whole had a very slow start to the season.

Europe

  • CSKA Moscow dropped three of a possible four points this week, going 0–1–1.
  • In last Tuesday’s game, Nikita Okhotyuk played over 20 minutes and recorded three blocked shots and two hits. Yesterday’s game was a different tale, as he saw just over 12 minutes time on ice. He still recorded a blocked shot and a takeaway, though.
  • Goalkeeper Yegor Yegorov saw action in both of Krylia Sovetov’s games this week. He was pulled in Saturday’s game after allowing five goals on 21 shots. He followed that with a much better relief performance on Sunday, stopping nine of the 10 shots he faced. He’s 4–7–0 now in the MHL with a 3.05 goals against average and a 0.911 save percentage.
  • Nothing to report on Daniil Chechelev and Kirill Zarubin this week, as neither saw any ice time.

NCAA

  • Trevor Hoskin’s efforts to help Niagara University to a 2–0–0 week earned him the title of Atlantic Hockey America’s Rookie of the Week. On the heels of a productive four points last week, he recorded three points in each game this week and is up to 29 in 26 games now. Watch as he finishes a breakaway while being hooked by the defender:
  • Penn State’s Arseni Sergeyev had a bit of a down week for his personal stats, but he backstopped his team to a 1–0–1 record. He’s still got a nice 8–5–3 record on the year with a 2.45 GAA and a 0.915 SV%.
  • Aydar Suniev and UMass took on Alaska in a two-game non-conference series this week. UMass came out on top, winning both games. Suniev didn’t pick up any points in the series, but he was nominated for the Hobey Baker Memorial Award. Good luck, Aydar!
  • Nothing to report on Cade Littler, whose team was not in action.

OHL

  • The Kingston Frontenacs went 2–1–0, with Jacob Battaglia recording at least one point in each game. The highly productive winger is up to 27 goals and 62 points in 44 games and is now 11th in OHL scoring. Good vision by Bates to create this turnover resulting in a goal:
  • Henry Mews had two helpers, but the Sudbury Wolves dropped both games this week, scoring just four goals in the process. Mews hit the 60-point mark right on and is now tied for 13th on OHL scoring while maintaining his tenuous lead on scoring by a defenceman.
  • Right behind Mews in the scoring race with 59 points is Saginaw Spirit blue liner Zayne Parekh. The 2024 ninth-overall pick scored five times and added three assists as Saginaw went 1–1–1. Scoring a hat trick and four points—and coming away with the win—against a team coached by Dave Cameron is the icing on the cake for Zayne this week. Check out this release:

QMJHL

  • Matvei Gridin scored a goal and four points in two games for the Shawinigan Cataractes, who also went 1–1–1. Gridin missed Friday’s game with an illness but suited up on Saturday and Sunday, picking up two points in each game. He’s up to 55 points on the year, good for eighth in QMJHL scoring. Some overall nice work by the rookie, here:
  • The Moncton Wildcats went 1–1–0 this week. Defenceman Etienne Morin picked up just one assist in two games, but he hit the 40-point mark with it. He’s just below a point per game, which is below the performance that convinced the Flames to draft him in the second round back in 2023.

WHL

  • Jaden Lipinski’s three-point week keeps him just below a point per game, with 36 in 37. The Vancouver Giants went 1–1–1, which is looking like a common theme for Flames prospects in the CHL. All of Lipinski’s points came in his team’s lone win on Saturday. This redirect on net resulted in a Giants goal:
  • After Lipinski, Hunter Laing was the only other Flames prospect in the WHL to record more than one point. He had two in two games as the Saskatoon Blades went 0–1–1.
  • The Medicine Hat Tigers continued rolling without Andrew Basha, going 3–0–0 this week. They outscored their opponents 16–7.

NHLe Leaderboard

NHLe is a metric used to estimate a player’s offensive output at the NHL level from their point totals in their respective league. Here are the Flames’ current top five (bracketed numbers denote movement from the previous week):

  1. Zayne Parekh: 40.0 (+3)
  2. Rory Kerins: 39.9 (-1)
  3. Jakob Pelletier: 37.9 (-1)
  4. Aydar Suniev: 37.7 (-1)
  5. Jacob Battaglia: 37.3 (+1)
