Cancellation of Young Stars Classic could signal return of Red Deer’s Young Guns Battle of Alberta

Yesterday the Vancouver Canucks announced that there will not be a 2025 edition of the Young Stars Classic in Penticton next September.

The team announced that they will participate in a two-game prospects showcase with the Seattle Kraken next fall, marking the beginning of a multi-year agreement between the two franchises.

Where does that leave the Calgary Flames and Edmonton Oilers?

As both teams have attended the event for the last few years now, do the provincial rivals bring back an old format?

In 2019, the two teams faced off at the now-named Peavey Mart Centrium in Red Deer, which was established in partnership with the Red Deer Rebels.

Dubbed the Young Guns Battle of Alberta, the rookie Flames squad claimed victory with a 1–0 score. Matthew Phillips secured the win with an overtime goal.

The two teams also faced off the previous season in 2018, with the Flames coming out with a 6–3 victory.

Having attended both of those games myself, the location is the perfect spot for a Battle of Alberta dispute, being outnumbered by Oiler fans an all.

However, that just made the victories that much sweeter.

Starting the Battle of Alberta early

The Battle of Alberta coming back to Red Deer isn’t confirmed, but it’s a logical option for the Flames and Oilers to pursue. Let’s hope it happens.
