Calgary Flames

Report: The Calgary Flames almost signed Dylan Holloway and Philip Broberg to dueling offer sheets

Jeff Marek has been out of the game for a little bit but re-entered the hockey world with a massive revelation today.

On his new show The Sheet over on Daily Faceoff, Marek provided some insider knowledge into the dual offer sheets that resulted in the Edmonton Oilers losing both Dylan Holloway and Philip Broberg to the St. Louis Blues.

The scoop? The Calgary Flames were one of the teams involved that almost signed the two players away from the Oilers.

A True Battle of Alberta

It had been rumored that two other teams were also involved in the chase for both players, but Marek confirmed more details about this on his show debut:

It sound very much like one of the teams was the Calgary Flames…I still don’t know who the third team was. That may remain a white whale for me, we shall see. It sounds very much like Calgary was one of the other teams in pursuit of the offer sheet for Philip Broberg and Dylan Holloway.

Holloway and Broberg came out of the gates extremely hot this season which gave some fans some stress. Holloway has scored seven times this year and added a total of 13 points to his total, which would have been some serious depth scoring for the Oilers. Broberg was setting records to start the season but had been sidelined until recently with a knee injury.

That being said, both players brought speed and youth to the Oilers lineup and the team took a while to adjust to this gap. Of course, it should come as no surprise that many in Edmonton are thrilled that both players ended up in St. Louis rather than Calgary.

The Flames could have desperately used both players in the short term and long term, so it’s no surprise that they were involved. It’s something we suggested they do in the summer. At the cost of just a few draft picks, that the Flames had in bunches, it would have been the perfect mood to re-ignite the Battle of Alberta.

It’s good to know that Craig Conroy is willing to stir the pot a bit.
