Calgary Flames Prospect Roundup: Luke Misa red hot for OHL’s Brampton Steelheads

Luke Misa has been an exciting storyline for Calgary Flames fans this season. From being selected in the fifth round at last June’s draft to scoring at a 1.33 points per game rate in the OHL, Misa is one of the organization’s hottest prospects.

Much like last season, William Stromgren is starting to put a cold start behind him. The 21-year-old picked up another three points this week, as did teammate Rory Kerins.

On defence, Eric Jamieson continued his solid output, leading the way among Flames prospects with a three-point week.

Let’s take a look at all the prospects!

Welcome to The Win Column’s Calgary Flames prospect update. Each week, we’ll take a dive into how the Flames’ prospects have done in their respective leagues. We have defined a prospect as a skater who has played fewer than 65 NHL games and is younger than 25 years of age.

All data is from QuantHockey and EliteProspects. We also use an NHLe calculator built by Christian Roatis (@Croatis), which is used to estimate a player’s equivalent point total in the NHL based on how they are performing in their respective league. The calculator uses the difficulty of the given league combined with the ease at which a player puts up points to determine the NHLe.

Flames prospect happenings

AHL

  • The Calgary Wranglers went 2–0–0 this week, taking the Manitoba Moose down 6–1 on Friday and 3–2 yesterday.
  • Defenceman Artyom Grushnikov (finally) picked up his first point of the season this week with an assist.
  • Adam Klapka has seen some action in the AHL now and has been productive. He has five goals and eight points in seven games. He also picked up 22 penalties in minutes in the span.
  • Leading goal-scorer Rory Kerins was at it again. Over the two-game series, he fired four shots on goal, with two of them finding the back of the net. He added an assist to cap off a solid three-point week.
  • William Stromgren had a goal and three points and now has 15 points in 21 games. Quite impressive after his slow start!
  • Parker Bell had two goals on two shots in Friday’s game. Unfortunately, they’re just his second and third of the year, and he’s sitting at three points in 15 games.
  • Winger Lucas Ciona also had a solid outing Friday. He was all over the scoresheet with two assists, two shots, a plus-two rating, and four PIM.
  • In other news, the Flames parted ways with Ilya Nikolayev this week. He was placed on waivers for mutual termination on Thursday, and his contract was terminated on Friday.

Europe

  • Nikita Okhotyuk picked up an assist yesterday, marking his fourth point of the season. His ice time was down from his norm, but that’s because his team stayed out of the box the entire game.
  • Thursday’s game was a different story. Okhotyuk recorded a whopping 4:52 time on ice shorthanded and registered a pair of blocked shots.
  • Kirill Zarubin got into another game this week. He improved his goals against average to 2.58 and his save percentage to .927. Overall on the season, Zarubin sits at a 5–4–0 record.
  • Another week saw Yegor Yegorov and Daniil Chechelev both ride the bench.

NCAA

  • Trevor Hoskin continued to produce with a pair of assists in two games this week, but Niagara went 0–2–0 and now rides a three-game skid. Hoskin is up to 15 points in 17 games.
  • Aydar Suniev picked up an assist in his team’s 3–1 win on Friday and now sits at 17 points in 15 games.
  • No games for Arseni Sergeyev at Penn State this week.

OHL

  • In just two games, Luke Misa had a goal and five points. He’s up to 13 goals and 32 points in 24 games and well on his way to besting last season’s career bests in both categories.
  • Jacob Battaglia had a goal and three points this week. His 16 goals lead the Kingston Frontenacs, and his 35 points are good for second on the team—one back of Cedrick Guindon.
  • Defenceman Henry Mews grabbed another pair of assists in two games. He’s been hot this season and—like Misa and Battaglia—is another prospect poised to set new career highs in the OHL.
  • Sensation Zayne Parekh had a quiet week by his standards, with just one assist across two games. He did receive a match penalty for cross-checking midway through Wednesday’s game, which resulted in a one-game suspension.

QMJHL

  • Flames 2024 first-rounder Matvei Gridin was quiet this week, with just one goal in two games. He’s still above a point per game on the year, though, with 28 in 24 games.
  • Moncton Wildcats defenceman Etienne Morin picked up another three assists in two games. He’s up to 27 points now.

WHL

  • Andrew Basha remains out with an injury. He’s missed 10 games now.
  • Not much else to say about the Flames forward prospects in the WHL. Both Hunter Laing and Jaden Lipinski were held without a point through two games.
  • Eric Jamieson was much more impressive, grabbing three assists in three games. He sits at a respectable half-point-per-game, with 13 in 26.
