Calgary Flames Prospect Roundup: Massive week for OHL prospects

What a huge week for the Calgary Flames’ prospects. Aside from the team’s goalies, it was a great week pretty well across the board.

The team’s four OHL prospects all had multi-point weeks, with Zayne Parekh leading the way this week. Outside of the O, Matvei Gridin and Etienne Morin both had huge weeks in the QMJHL. Both are among the top players on their team.

Aydar Suniev continues to be one of the top players in the NCAA again this week and had another multipoint week this week.

Let’s dive in on the full pipeline of Flames prospects!

Welcome to The Win Column’s Calgary Flames prospect update. Each week, we’ll take a dive into how the Flames’ prospects have done in their respective leagues. We have defined a prospect as a skater who has played fewer than 65 NHL games and is younger than 25 years of age.

All data is from QuantHockey and EliteProspects. We also use an NHLe calculator built by Christian Roatis (@Croatis), which is used to estimate a player’s equivalent point total in the NHL based on how they are performing in their respective league. The calculator uses the difficulty of the given league combined with the ease at which a player puts up points to determine the NHLe.

Flames prospect happenings

AHL

  • The Wranglers played two games this week against the San Jose Barracuda. They won the first game but lost in overtime in the second.
  • Another big week for the Wranglers’ top guys. Three more goals for Rory Kerins, who is up to 13 on the season. He leads the league in goals and sits fourth in points on the year. He’s probably due for a call-up.
  • Not far behind, Jakob Pelletier had two more assists this week. He sits 12th in league scoring this year.
  • Four assists for William Stromgren, who is starting to heat up. He’s up to 11 points on the year.
  • Not a great showing for Walterri Ignatjew, who was in net in the loss. He sits 58th out of the 86 goalies who have played at least a game this season in save percentage. Fun fact: he’s tied in this category with former Flames goalie Louis Domingue.

Europe/Asia

  • Yegor Yegorov played two games in the NMHL (below the MHL) and saw his numbers crater. He’s down to a 0.891 save percentage and has a 4–3–1 record in eight games.
  • Kirill Zarubin has been pretty steady this year and saw his numbers trend upwards. He played one game and owns a 0.918 save percentage on the year.

NCAA

  • Another massive week for Aydar Suniev, who had two goals and two assists for UMass. He sits 14th in scoring in the entire NCAA right now.
  • No points for Cade Littler this week at UND.
  • Two games for Arseni Sergeev in the NCAA with Penn State. He’s played basically every game for the team so far this season. Good to see him getting heavy minutes.
  • No points this week for Trevor Hoskin at Niagara. He’s slowed down after a very hot start.

OHL

  • The Flames’ OHL prospects are the ones to watch right now. Zayne Parekh had a monster week this week, putting up two goals and six assists for Saginaw. He currently sits third in scoring among defencemen.
  • Right behind him in fourth is Henry Mews, who also has 23 points on the year. He had three goals and two assists for the Ottawa 67s.
  • Up front, it continues to be the Jacob Battaglia show. The Kingston Frontenacs forward has 31 points on the year, good for fifth in the league. He added three assists this week.
  • Luke Misa had two goals and two assists himself for Brampton. He’s 30th in the league in scoring and sits third on his team. He’s playing on the same team as projected first-round pick Porter Martone.

QMJHL

  • Forward Matvei Gridin had another massive week for Shawinigan. He added two goals and three assists for the QMJHL side, which sits second in the Central Division. He’s the only prospect on his team and sits third on the team in scoring.
  • Etienne Morin continues to light up the Q. He had one goal this week and sits with 20 points in 19 games. He sits sixth among defencemen in points and second among U20 defencemen.
  • Fun fact: Justin Poirier, Jeremie Poirier’s younger brother, has 35 points in 20 games this year and sits second in the league in scoring.

WHL

  • Two assists this week for Jaden Lipinski in Vancouver. He’s just about at a point-per-game scoring pace.
  • Bad news for Andrew Basha. The forward is listed as week-to-week and didn’t play at all this week. He’s still above a point per game.
  • Another goal this week for Hunter Laing in Prince George. Eric Jamieson also had a goal this week for the Everett Silvertips.
