The Calgary Flames opened the first game of a three-game Atlantic Division road trip against the Montreal Canadiens. Towards the end of the first period, a series of unfortunate events culminated in Flames forward Anthony Mantha leaving the game with an injury.
Mantha injured in play
Mantha was sprung on a breakaway where his backhand shot was stopped by Sam Montembeault. Shortly after, Mantha took an awkward hit from former Flames prospect Emil Heineman.
Slow to get up, Mantha skated towards the bench to end his shift and game. He played a total of six shifts in the first with 5:06 of ice time before he exited the game. The Flames later announced that Mantha would not return with a lower-body injury.
A rough start for Mantha
Mantha had arguably one of the most memorable debuts in a Flames uniform with an unreal performance. His play had continuously dropped off since then, but he looked like he was just on the cusp of turning things around again. This included being on a three-game point streak that is unfortunately ending now.
Realistically he should be doing better as he’s been labelled as one of the more disappointing Flames players so far.
Let’s hope this injury isn’t too serious and that Mantha can come back and pick up where he left off.
