Jacob Markstrom will start in goal against the Calgary Flames tonight

In his very first visit back to the Scotiabank Saddledome since being traded in June, former Calgary Flames goaltender Jacob Markstrom will start in goal for the visiting New Jersey Devils.

An emotional night

This will surely be an emotional night for Markstrom, his former teammates, and many fans. While his final months in Calgary were littered with unsavoury rumours about trade requests and a contentious dressing room, Markstrom is one of the best goaltenders the Flames have ever had the pleasure of employing.

Markstrom finished second in Vezina voting as goalie of the year in 2022 and was named a second-team NHL All-star in 2023-24.

He will go down as a cornerstone of one of the most distinct eras of Flames hockey which included Johnny Gaudreau, Matthew Tkachuk, Sean Monahan, and Mark Giordano.

In Markstrom’s return to the ‘Dome, fans should thank and honour him for his time and service to the Flames. Not only did he represent the Flames and the city of Calgary well during his time here, the Flames managed to get a solid return for him when he was traded in June.
