Flames recall forward Matt Coronato, Sam Honzek sent down to AHL

Six days after forward Matt Coronato was sent down to the AHL, the Calgary Flames announced this afternoon that the 21-year-old has been recalled to the big club.

In the same transaction, Sam Honzek was sent to the Calgary Wranglers to open a roster spot for Coronato’s return.

Coronato took part in two games for the Wranglers this past week, including a two-goal performance over the San Diego Gulls on Tuesday night to help extend the Wranglers’ win streak to eight games.

Honzek made his return from injury last night, playing for the Flames in their road contest against the Utah Hockey Club.

Honzek has been held off the scoresheet in all five appearances with the Flames after having an impressive pre-season in which he led the Flames in scoring.

The road ahead for Coronato and Honzek

Despite only scoring in two games, the 2021 13th overall pick Coronato has had some good showings in his 12:15 average TOI in five games with the Flames.

Let’s see if Coronato gets another chance at the top-six and can add some scoring touch, as the Flames have only scored once in the last two games.

As for Honzek, this assignment doesn’t come as a surprise as the 19-year-old has only seven professional North American hockey appearancesand has yet to pick up a point.

Considering the two injuries he has faced in the past two seasons, spending some time in the AHL may benefit the young Slovak’s development.
