With the imminent return of forwards Yegor Sharangovich and Sam Honzek from their injuries, the Calgary Flames assigned Matt Coronato to the AHL’s Calgary Wranglers today, as reported by Pat Steinberg.
Coronato practiced today on a fifth forward line with Sharangovich and Honzek, who are both yet to be activated off the injured reserve.
The assignment is not surprising, considering Coronato was averaging 12:15 of time on ice through five contests. He scored two goals on three shots along with three hits in the Flames’ 3–1 win over the Chicago Blackhawks on October 15, 2024, but has otherwise been a non-factor on the scoresheet. He recorded a combined three shots on goal and seven hits in his other four games.
Coronato’s underlying stats have been very good so far, though. Starting 42% of his shifts in the offensive zone, he has a 49.1% Corsi For at even strength. That’s good for fifth among Flames forwards. His 48.6% Fenwick For is only slightly worse but also ranks fifth among Flames forwards. These stats are courtesy of HockeyReference.
Coronato should get plenty of opportunity with the Wranglers
Coronato scored 15 goals and 42 points in 41 games with the Wranglers last season and added another goal and six points in six playoff contests. He finished third in point-scoring among all Wranglers players last season despite playing more than 20 games fewer than Adam Klapka and Ben Jones, who finished first and second, respectively. The Flames’ 13th overall pick in 2021 gets another chance to help lead the offensive charge for the Wranglers, which should build his confidence.
The Wranglers are not having any issues scoring right now, as Rory Kerins, Walker Duehr, and Jakob Pelletier have combined for 24 points through six games. Coronato only makes the offence that much more potent. Going from playing 12 minutes a night to top-six minutes and probably top power play will only benefit him. Make no mistake, Coronato will be back.
