Editor’s Update 10/25: Per The Hockey News, the OHL has found no conclusive evidence and there is no punishment expected for Parekh from the league. Our original story remains written below.
The Calgary Flames have been the feel-good team this season, with their miraculous start and overachieving play on the ice. Unfortunately, that streak of good news is hitting a slight snag.
Reports came out on Thursday that 2024 first-round pick Zayne Parekh was involved in an altercation with a fan. Initial reports noted that Parekh struck a fan with his stick after being ejected from the game.
Here is what we know about the situation:
Suspension incoming for Parekh
In Wednesday’s game between the Soo Greyhounds and Saginaw Spirit, Parekh was ejected late in the third period after taking a run at Owen Allard. Allard who was in a vulnerable position against the boards, was able to get up immediately, but the hit itself was still irresponsible by Parekh.
After being ejected, Parekh allegedly went into the stands and struck a fan with his stick. Online speculation suggests potential racial comments were involved, but so far, this has not been confirmed by either the player or the organization.
The altercation itself allegedly was not severe, but it is still something that you cannot do. After a full review of the situation, Parekh will likely not be suited up for several games.
Details are still vague so we will update this story as more information rolls in.
