Nazem Kadri turned down offers from other teams to specifically play for the Calgary Flames

Nazem Kadri recently became an author, releasing his latest new book, Dreamer: My Life On The Edge. The book follows his personal journey toward the NHL and navigating the struggles of being a player who’s part of a minority group. His stories of navigating racism and the fighting against the odds while he was growing up shaped him into the player he is today, including winning a Stanley Cup.

The book allows readers to get the behind-the-scenes scoop on his life on and off the ice. It’s also known that Kadri included information about his negotiations during the 2022 offseason when he was a free agent. Apparently coming back to a Canadian market was something that meant a lot to Kadri, which resulted in him signing a seven-year, $49 million contract with the Calgary Flames.

In Nazem Kadri’s book “Dreamer,” he mentioned that he turned down offers from the Islanders, Rangers and Red Wings to “return to Canada.”

Kadri is the type of player that flourishes in Canadian markets

Kadri declined offers from high-profile teams to specifically come back to Canada. After spending seven full seasons with the Toronto Maple Leafs, it’s understandable why he would want to return to his home country despite finding more success in Colorado.

Kadri’s demeanour and swagger perfectly allow him to navigate the pressure a Canadian market can have. The media within Canada is more central and little plays and mistakes are more magnified than they should be. However, Kadri isn’t fazed by it and in a way embraces the pressure that is against him. It takes special players to able to handle that.

Additionally, Calgary’s position at the time was another factor that influenced Kadri’s decision to sign there. The team was the story of the 2022 offseason highlighted by the “Summer of Brad”. After losing both of their franchise players, the Flames were able to rebound back into the playoff conversation with the addition of Kadri along with the blockbuster Matthew Tkachuk deal. Winning a Stanley Cup in the Canadian market is a dream that all Canadian hockey players share, including Kadri himself.

Kadri has defined himself as a leader on the Flames

While the “Summer of Brad” blew up in the team’s face and kickstarted the rebuild, the addition of Kadri has proven to be very valuable for this Flames team.

Kadri has fully embraced his time in Calgary and has established himself as a strong mentor for younger players. It also helps how he’s still playing at an elite level despite being in his mid-thirties. He along with other veteran players have bought into what Calgary is doing and want to be part of the eventual solution for the Flames to be right back in contention.

Having players like Kadri around is how rebuilds succeed. He has a winning track record and knows the ins and outs of being an NHLer, something that young players can have issues adjusting to.

It’s therefore unlikely that players like Kadri will get traded for now. The Flames have been playing incredible hockey and can focus on the path ahead without dealing with any drama from trade rumours. While Kadri signed in Calgary assuming they would continue being a contender, I’m sure he doesn’t regret his decision to come here to this day. His leadership on the ice has been a valuable reason to keep his services around in hopes of helping facilitate a smooth transition to the NHL for the next generation of Flames players.
