Calgary Flames face tough lineup decisions as three forwards near return from injury

Some key pieces in the Calgary Flames lineup are getting closer to a return, as Yegor Sharangovich and Sam Honzek have started taking morning skates, as TSN’s Salim Valji reported this morning.

Big news as well—Yegor Sharangovich and Samuel Honzek are skating too. Sharangovich’s first skate of the regular season after getting hurt near the end of preseason

Injury woes for multiple Flames forwards

Sharangovich returns to the ice for the first time since suffering a lower-body injury during the preseason finale against the Winnipeg Jets, where forward Vladislav Namestnikov fell onto his right leg.

Honzek has missed the last two games with an upper-body injury after being sidelined in last week’s game when the rookie took a hit from Chicago Blackhawks defenceman Connor Murphy.

Ryan Huska states that both forwards are now day-to-day after previously being listed as week-to-week.

On top of all of this, forward Kevin Rooney returns to the lineup tonight against the Hurricanes, he has been back skating with the Flames after he returned to practice last week in Canmore.

Where the players fit in the lineup

It’s safe to say that Sharangovich should return to the Flames’ top-six, as the second-year Flame had an impressive season, scoring 31 goals, a career-high with his new club.

It’s a bit harder with Honzek, you could see a stint in the AHL as the forward has gone scoreless in four games after coming into the lineup when Rooney was injured in the season opener against the Vancouver Canucks.

With the emergence of Justin Kirkland, spots are getting tighter for Honzek as Rooney returns to the lineup and may get even tighter if Craig Conroy is really in the market for another centre.

The Flames have some tough lineup decisions coming up as all three forwards are gearing closer to a return.
