The Calgary Flames have been riding a high as of late, but got a bit of a rude wake-up on Thursday morning with some injury news.
Rookie forward Sam Honzek has suffered an upper-body injury and is now out week-to-week.
It was a tough break for Honzek after making the team out of training camp.
Injury history continues for Honzek
It hasn’t been great for Honzek in the last year in terms of injuries and this continues to be a trend in his early career. Last season he suffered an abdomen injury in the preseason opener against the Edmonton Oilers which derailed his training camp and season with the Vancouver Giants.
This time around, it’s quite clear he was injured on this reverse hit on Connor Murphy Tuesday night:
It was shocking to see Honzek get up so quickly and stay in the game, but the next day likely showed more damage. Honzek had been playing decent in the NHL, but it’s likely that after his injury is healed he will be playing in the AHL for the Calgary Wranglers to get some more pro experience.
In better news, the Flames look to be filling out his top-line role with Matt Coronato after his two-goal performance. Despite the injury creating the space, this is a great opportunity for Coronato to showcase his skills.
