The Flames assigned six more players to the Wranglers and placed two on waivers

The Calgary Flames have announced more cuts to their roster. Yesterday, they announced a number of AHL players returning to the Calgary Wranglers, and Zayne Parekh was returned to the Saginaw Spirit of the OHL. The assignments yesterday weren’t surprising. Today, the Flames sent down a number of prospects, including 2021 second-rounder William Stromgren and 2020 third-rounder Jeremie Poirier.

Assignments and cuts

The following players have been assigned to the AHL:

  • LW Parker Bell
  • LW Lucas Ciona
  • LW William Stromgren
  • C Jaden Lipinski
  • D Jeremie Poirier
  • D Joni Jurmo

I’m sure some of these prospects thought they’d be up with the Flames longer, but competition is tight, and other prospects are performing better. Bell and Ciona will likely be fighting for the same spot on the Wranglers or be assigned to the ECHL.

Stromgren started the 2023–24 season rough but really came into his own as the season went on. He’ll look to take another step this year and try to challenge for a call-up spot.

Poirier got stuck behind the plethora of defencemen the Flames have at camp, so he’ll look to try to put his name higher up the call-up list. After a 2023–24 season plagued by injury, 2024–25 provides an opportunity for Poirier to get adjusted and back to the productive transition defenceman he can be.

Players remaining in camp

After this wave of cuts, the Flames’ camp roster is down to 40 players: four goaltenders, 14 defencemen, and 22 forwards.

Goaltenders

  • Devin Cooley
  • Dan Vladar
  • Dustin Wolf
  • Walterri Ignatjew

Defencemen

Forwards

Earlier today, the Flames placed Clark Bishop and Jonathan Aspirot on waivers with the intention of assigning them to the AHL. If they clear—which is likely—they’ll be assigned to the AHL tomorrow morning, reducing the Flames’ training camp roster to 38 players.
