Calgary Flames fill out their defensive depth ahead of training camp with multiple signings

The Calgary Flames are gearing up for the start of the 2024–25 season and are tending to their blueline with a couple of signings that take on different forms. The Flames were reportedly signing Tyson Barrie to a PTO and that has been made official by the team. Alongside that addition, the Flames signed 32-year-old Jarred Tinordi to a one-year deal.

Blueline additions for training camp and beyond

Adding Tyson Barrie on a PTO did make sense for the Flames as he would serve various roles. He’d come in as an extra defenceman who might just challenge for a roster spot, and that would be healthy competition in September and October. And if it turns out no other players have quite stepped up to take blue line roles, then Barrie comes in as a strong power play quarterback if nothing else. He’s essentially a no-risk add while on his PTO, and wouldn’t be the worst option if he lasts beyond that.

Tinordi, meanwhile, has earned a one-year contract outright. That said it’s a two-way deal and he’ll likely be one of the first candidates to play out the season in the AHL if other players take NHL roster spots.

Depth is a good thing

While the Flames aren’t making any headlines with their offseason signings, the reality is that they shouldn’t be. These additions fall right into line with what’s expected of the Flames this season as they embark on their rebuild. It’s never a bad idea to add veteran players to challenge and mentor their younger players and this is the best time to do it.
