Calgary Flames

Survey suggests differing opinions between Flames fans and the leaguewide perception on the Flames’ front office

The Athletic put out their annual front-office confidence rankings. I encourage you to check out the full article. For these rankings, they ask fans to give their opinions on several different aspects that NHL front offices have to tackle, including trading, cap management, and vision.

This year, the Calgary Flames front office ranked 18th. This was quite a jump from last year, when the Flames ranked as the 31st-best front office.

Public perception differs from the Flames fanbase

The public perception of the Calgary Flames couldn’t be any more different than the feelings of the fanbase itself. From the graphic above, an astounding 93% of voters from the Flames fanbase said they had more confidence over the last year. And why wouldn’t you?

We are a month and a half removed from one of the Flames’ best drafts in recent memory. The team has finally picked a direction—for the time being—and looks to be focused on the future. They traded their pending unrestricted free agents instead of extending them, although they got some help from Elias Lindholm and Noah Hanifin, who rejected extension offers.

The public vote showed that 59% of voters said they had less confidence in the front office over the last year. From an outsider’s perspective, I can understand why people might be more skeptical. They have seen the Flames continuously trade away players over the last calendar year. That can be seen as a negative, but from a fanbase perspective, it is what many Flames fans have been preaching for years.

Looking at how the public and fanbase voted on respective categories

Roster Building is the first category, and the public ranked the Flames front office at 30th in the league. This is a fair ranking from the outside, and the Flames don’t have a very good roster heading into 2024–25. The fanbase ranked them 13th in the league.

Trading, Free Agency, and Vision also fell within a similar range to Roster Building. Public perception ranked the Flames front office in the late twenties for these categories, while the fanbase ranked it in the early teens.

Cap Management and Draft and Develop are the two categories in which the fanbase ranked the highest. These two ranked seventh and sixth highest in the league, respectively. This makes sense, as the team did not spend huge amounts of money in free agency and just did a great job with the 2024 NHL Draft. Public perception in these two categories was 25th and 27th, respectively, which is low. But since the Flames are in the early stages of their rebuild, there is lots of time to change the perspective of the public.

All in all, the public ranked the Flames as the 29th best front office, while the fanbase ranked them as the seventh best. I’m sure Craig Conroy and co. would be quite happy to see the results within the fanbase. They have changed their reputation quite drastically over one season. Now, let’s hope they continue with their plan and don’t rush things.
