The second day of the NHL draft is underway. With their first pick in the third round, the Calgary Flames have selected defenceman Henry Mews out of the OHL with their 74th overall pick.
Henry Mews player profile
Mews—much like the Flames’ ninth overall selection Zayne Parekh—is a highly skilled offensive defenceman. Mews is an incredibly talented skater, allowing him to impact play from the backend in the offensive zone and in transition. He’s very much your typical 18-year-old offensive defenceman, regularly dictating play on offence but also giving up quite a bit the other way.
This past season Mews led the 67’s in scoring from the blueline. As well his 61 points were the third highest among draft-eligible OHL defencemen behind only Parekh and Sam Dickinson.

Analyzing the Flames’ pick
Boy, is Conroy nailing this draft so far. In Mews, the Flames add yet another high offence player who brings a ton of skill to the table. The Flames continue to add highly skilled defenders to their prospect pool and Mews just adds another name to the list. At 74th overall this is great value for the Flames and well worth the bet.
What’s next for Mews
Mews will return to the 67’s in the OHL next season where the goal will be to continue to work on his defensive game and decision-making in order to continue to round out his game. Much like Jeremie Poirier, Mews will need to focus on improving away from the puck in junior before making the jump to the pro ranks.
