The second day of the NHL draft is underway. With their first of seven picks on day two, the Calgary Flames have selected winger and local Calgary kid Andrew Basha out of the WHL with their 41st overall pick in the second round.
Player Profile
Basha is a supremely skilled forward whose game is built on speed and skill. He may be the fastest winger in the entire 2024 draft. Basha had a real strong draft year in the WHL with 85 points in 63 games, finishing first on his team among 2024 draft eligible skaters. He was widely regarded as a late first round pick, so picking him up at 41st overall is a great get for the Flames.

Analyzing the Flames’ pick
Basha brings the exact type of dynamic skill the Flames need in their prospect pool. They may already have plenty of bodies on the wing, but Basha brings the toolkit that many of the current Flames prospects don’t have. Being a local Calgary born kid is just another added bonus that makes this a tremendous pickup for Calgary at 41st overall.
What’s next for
Basha will return to the WHL next season for his fourth season in the league, where he will be one of the Medicine Hat Tigers’ most important players. Look for him to be among the highest scoring players in the WHL next year as he continues to round out his game.
