The first round of the 2024 NHL Draft is near its conclusion. With their second selection in the 2024 NHL Draft, the Calgary Flames have selected Matvei Gridin.
Matvei Gridin player profile
Coming from the USHL, Gridin has been on scout radars for a while because of his shooting, offensive instincts, and finishing. His game in transition is smooth and excels because of his spatial awareness and chance creation. Serving as a special teams contributor with his current team, it remains to be seen if that will translate to the NHL level.

For a deeper dive, here’s The Win Column’s draft profile for Gridin:
Analyzing the pick
The Flames gain another high-end prospect to add to their pipeline as they look to re-build/re-tool. Gridin certainly does this for the organization as it brings in another high-ceiling prospect to their pipeline.
Matvei Gridin shows untapped potential, and with the earlier selection of Zayne Parekh, they serve as two capable Flames of the future.
What’s next for Gridin
Being a late first-round selection always brings out high-upside players that are more raw—much like Gridin. It is likely that he will see middle-six minutes in the future.
As is the case with most picks outside of the top five, Gridin needs a bit of development, which makes it likely he goes to the NCAA’s University of Michigan next season.
The development of Flames prospects is half selecting the right players and half having the patience. They’re on the right track so far.
