The trade of Jacob Markstrom was a difficult one for the Flames, in large part due to the No-Move Clause that Markstrom owned. To accompany the trade to New Jersey, Markstrom had to give his consent to move. In reality, the Flames could have agreed to a trade with Jersey, but if Markstrom didn’t want to move, he didn’t have to. No-Move Clauses (NMC’s) and Modified No-Trade Lists (M-NTC’s) have become a real bargaining chip for players in today’s NHL. With that in mind, let’s take a look at the trade clauses that the Flames currently have:
Clauses that are changing
Blake Coleman
Coleman has held a full NTC for the length of his deal in Calgary thus far. Now, on July 1st, Coleman’s full NTC with translate to a 10 team trade list. So, the Flames now have some options to move him, if they so choose.
Rasmus Andersson
Andersson has a new addition to his contract, a six team NTC that kicks in on July 1st of this year.
Clauses that remain
Mikael Backlund
In signing his new contract extension, Backlund has a full NMC for 2024-25. He had a full NMC kick in last year due to the provision in his contract extension. Backlund’s NMC becomes a 15 team No Trade List on January 1st, 2026.
Jonathan Huberdeau
Huberdeau has a full NMC until 2029-30. That NMC becomes a 12 team trade list following that.
Nazem Kadri
Kadri has a full NMC until 2026-27. After that, the full NMC will translate into a 13 team no-trade list.
Andrew Mangiapane
Mangiapane is entering the final year of his contract. With that contract, Mangiapane has an 8 team no trade list.
Andrei Kuzmenko
Kuzmenko has a 12 team No-Trade Clause. In order to come to Calgary, Kuzmenko did have to waive this clause, as the Flames were on his no-trade list.
MacKenzie Weegar
Weegar has a dull NTC through the 2026-27 season. In 2027-28, Weegar’s full NTC will translate to a 10 team no-trade list.
