An update on the Calgary Flames conditional draft picks after round two of the Stanley Cup playoffs

The Calgary Flames made three trades involving conditional draft picks prior to the Trade Deadline. One of those conditions was has already been sorted out after the first round. Now that the second round has completed, the conditional picks in the two other trades have been affected. Let’s begin with the Chris Tanev deal:

Chris Tanev trade

The Chris Tanev trade is still up in the air as the Stars continue to advance in the playoffs. The two pieces that are guaranteed in the Tanev trade are defensive prospect Artem Grushnikov and Dallas’ 2024 second-round draft choice. The third piece is Dallas’ 2026 third-round draft choice, which will only transfer to the Flames if the Stars advance to the Stanley Cup Final.

The Dallas Stars effectively beat the Colorado Avalanche in six games to advance to the Conference Finals. If they beat the Edmonton Oilers in the Conference Finals and advance to the Finals, the Flames will receive Dallas’ 2026 third-round draft pick.

Rooting for Chris Tanev to advance to the Cup finals, the Oilers demise, and a third-round pick for your troubles? The Stars are about the easiest team to root for in the third round.

Elias Lindholm trade

The Elias Lindholm trade is now complete following the Vancouver Canucks loss to the Edmonton Oilers.

From the conditions of the deal, the New Jersey Devils 2024 fourth-round draft choice (previously acquired by the Canucks in exchange for Curtis Lazar) would have upgraded to Vancouver’s 2024 third rounder if Vancouver made the Conference Finals this year. That did not happen, so the 2024 fourth rounder will remain. The full deal is Elias Lindholm in exchange for Andrei Kuzmenko, Hunter Brzustewicz, Joni Jurmo, Vancouver’s 2024 1st, and Vancouver’s 2024 4th.

What the 2024 NHL Draft now looks like

The conditional pick in the Tanev deal is in 2026, so the Flames draft order for 2024 is settled. The Flames will now have the following picks in the 2024 NHL Draft:

  • 1st round picks: 2x (CGY, VAN)
  • 2nd round picks 2x (CGY, DAL)
  • 3rd round picks 2x (CGY, VGK)
  • 4th round picks 2x (CGY, VAN)
  • 6th round pick (CGY)

The Flames traded their own pick fifth-round pick to the Chicago Blackhawks at the 2022 trade deadline in a deal to acquire Ryan Carpenter. Similarly, Calgary traded their own pick seventh-round pick to the Seattle Kraken before the 2022 trade deadline in a deal to acquire Calle Jarnkrok.
