Yegor Sharangovich breaks record for most goals in a season by a Belarusian

Arguably one of the best trades Craig Conroy has made in his brief tenure as General Manager of the Calgary Flames was acquiring Yegor Sharangovich from the New Jersey Devils.

Despite a lacklustre 2022–23 season where Sharangovich fell out of favour with coaches and found himself watching playoff games from the press box, he has found another gear in Calgary. He has outscored the guy he was traded for, has played a crucial role on the Flames’ top line for the majority of the season, and has now cemented his name in history.

With his 30th goal of the season on Saturday night against the Edmonton Oilers, Sharangovich set a new NHL record for the most goals in a season by a Belarusian player.

The new King of Belarus

The previous record was held by Mikhail Grabovski who scored 29 goals as a member of the Toronto Maple Leafs in 2010–11. He suited up for all 82 games that season, adding 29 assists to finish with 58 points. Grabovski holds the record for most points in a season by a Belarusian.

Sharangovich’s 30 goals through 76 games is the new standard, and he still has six games left in which to increase the mark.

With 26 assists on the season, Sharangovich is sitting at 56 points, just two back of the single-season Belarusian points record. With three more points in the next six games, Sharangovich can surpass Grabovski’s points record, too.

Here’s hoping Sharangovich can top off a fantastic season with a few records under his belt as well.
