Flames Game Recaps

Flames Visual Recap 73: Calgary dominates Los Angeles to stop losing skid at five games

The Calgary Flames were free-falling down the standings as their lottery chances continued to rise. After losing five games in a row, the Flames had a tough task in facing the Los Angeles Kings who were sure to be hungry for a win after losing to the Edmonton Oilers.

However, the Flames were instead the hungrier team as snapping their losing skid was the better motivator for the night as they dominated the Kings.

Notes and discussion from the charts are all below, read on to see it all!

Game events

  • The Flames posted 35 shots to the Kings’ 18. What’s more incredible is that the Flames were up 16–4 in shots after one period and up 25–9 after two. In all three periods, the Flames were better.
  • This is on top of the Kings blocking 27 shots. If it hadn’t been for that, Calgary’s shot counter could have been even higher.
  • There were a handful of penalties in this game and it heavily impacted the final score.

All situations Corsi

  • The two teams traded power play goals early in the first period but as the game progressed, the Flames pulled away.
  • Calgary first restored the lead as the two teams went from trading goals to trading penalties. the Flames finally broke through on their power play again only for the Kings to answer back on their very next power play.
  • However, the Flames had another answer on the power play midway through the third period and they cruised to the finish line.
  • The Flames got goals from in close which is a good thing, but they still tend to shoot from all over the ice. The team doesn’t have the same ability to funnel pucks into the slot as elite offensive teams do.
  • Meanwhile, the Kings had a few high-danger shots but were kept mostly to the outside.

5v5 Corsi

  • With so much of the game being played away from 5v5, it’s still worth noting the Flames had the lion’s share of shot attempts.
  • However, the shot plots at 5v5 show that the team teams were actually a little more even. Despite Calgary controlling the shot share, the two teams were more equal in terms of high-danger chances.
  • A lot of the Flames’ shot volume came from afar.
