Flames Game Recaps

Flames Visual Recap 70: Calgary comes up short in back-to-back as Buffalo gets the better of them

The Calgary Flames returned to the Saddledome looking to get back into the win column having lost their previous two games. However, in facing the Buffalo Sabres, the visitors walked away with the win while the Flames were left pointless.

This game actually led to the Sabres passing the Flames in the standings, where the Flames now find themselves in the bottom 10 of the NHL.

Notes and discussion from the charts are all below, read on to see it all!

Game events

  • Don’t let the score fool you, Dustin Wolf played a great game and gave up just two goals, as the Sabres scored two empty-netters. Wolf gave the Flames another reminder of why he’s the goalie of the future.
  • This wasn’t a very physical game as both teams combined for just 25 hits.
  • Calgary had better results in the faceoff dot and was generally disciplined—taking just one penalty.

All situations Corsi

  • The two teams were close with one another in terms of shot attempts for about half of the game. Then the Flames pulled away to get the game-tying goal and stayed ahead, but they couldn’t find the go-ahead goal at any point.
  • The Flames’ offence was scatted across the offensive zone with not too much focus on the high-danger areas. This likely factored into the Flames’ lack of goals as they didn’t make it hard for Buffalo to defend.
  • On the other end, Buffalo had a good number of slot shots and scored on one of their opportunities there. Calgary’s defence could have been better to help Wolf out.

5v5 Corsi

  • Most of the game ended up being played at 5v5 as there were just three total power plays and the Flames scored early on their first one.
  • The Sabres’ last 5v5 shot attempt came closer to the midway mark of the third period as the Flames pressed to tie the game to no avail.
  • At 5v5, the shot locations make the Flames’ game look quite bad as they barely got anything from the net-front area.
