Flames Game Recaps

Flames Visual Recap 66: Four-goal third period powers Calgary past Hanifin and the Golden Knights

The Calgary Flames have been in a big rut. Surrounding 18 goals over their past three games, they desperately needed to stop the bleeding. With the Vegas Golden Knights visiting and it being Noah Hanifin‘s return to the Saddledome, the Flames turned to Dustin Wolf in net to try to get back into the win column.

Notes and discussion from the charts are all below, read on to see it all!

Game events

  • Things went right for the Flames in starting Wolf. He posted a .966 save percentage, stopping 28 of 29 shots. He made some spectacular saves, some of which even led to fastbreak goals for Calgary.
  • The Flames were stymied for the first two periods by Adin Hill, but they stuck to the game plan in the third period and got four goals past him to turn a 1–0 deficit into a 4–1 win.
  • Calgary was steady on offence with a rather even split of 12, 12, and 13 shots in each period.

  • Aside from the empty-netter, all three of Calgary’s goals came in transition plays entering the offensive zone. That’s one heck of a way to make it exciting.
  • Dryden Hunt has been strong in his latest sting with the Flames and he picked up two primary assists thanks to some great vision entering the zone.
  • Matt Coronato picking up a goal was well-deserved as he played an excellent game.
  • Hanifin had two shots on goal and was minus-one.

All situations Corsi

  • As mentioned, the Flames were steady with their shots. Even their shot attempts tell a similar story. While they didn’t have stretches with strong offence, they didn’t have offensive lulls either. They just kept going from start to finish.
  • No power play goals for either team but the Flames’ first goal did come right after their man advantage expired.
  • The Golden Knights had a fair number of high-danger opportunities but Wolf was superb. This might have been one of his best showings in the NHL.
  • The Flames were excellent at getting pucks to the slot for great chances. As mentioned, their transition game paid off for them as all three goals came from high-danger areas with barely any time needed to set up in the zone.

5v5 Corsi

  • The Flames were much stronger at 5v5 than the Golden Knights. Vegas’ power play made the total shot attempts a lot closer, but at 5v5 it wasn’t particularly close, especially considering score effects.
  • This shot plot is exactly the type of game that gives you hope about Calgary. They can play good hockey still and they can shutdown other offences. This is how you rebound from allowing nearly 20 goals in three games.
