Flames Game Recaps

Flames Visual Recap 64: Lifeless Flames fall flat against Aho and the Hurricanes

If the Calgary Flames played the way they did against the Hurricanes leading up to the trade deadline, perhaps they would have sold off more assets than they did. It might have been one of Calgary’s worst showings in a long time as the Carolina Hurricanes dominated them from start to finish.

Notes and discussion from the charts are all below, read on to see it all!

Game events

  • The Hurricanes doubled the Flames’ shot output. Yikes.
  • The Flames had more blocks and hits, which are both indicative of how often they didn’t have the puck themselves.

  • The Flames were out of the game by the time the second period came to an end. With Carolina up 4–0, Dryden Hunt scored for Calgary to cut into the lead, but the Hurricanes responded with two more goals.
  • Hunt’s goal came on a great setup from Oliver Kylington in a quick transition play.
  • Yegor Sharangovich potted another goal to gain sole possession of first on the Flames with his 27th of the year. The goal came on a flub from Frederik Andersen that landed right on Sharangovich’s stick for an empty-netter goal.
  • Sebastian Aho factored into three of Carolina’s seven goals.

All situations Corsi

  • This is ugly. The Flames flatlined throughout the entire first period for one of the worst periods of hockey of the season. One shot attempt followed by virtually nothing for the whole first period.
  • While Carolina’s first power play was flukey, there was no response from Calgary whatsoever. The four straight goals from Carolina was too much for the Flames to overcome.
  • The disparity between shot attempts too is even worse as the Flames trailed and couldn’t do anything about as the Hurricanes did not relent.
  • The Flames were hardly present in the offensive zone.
  • Meanwhile, the Hurricanes scored virtually at will from anywhere they wanted too.

5v5 Corsi

  • Things were even worse for Calgary at 5v5. By the time the game ended the Hurricanes had more than double the Flames’ 5v5 Corsi attempts.
  • The Flames had precisely zero moments of sustained pressure.
  • Seven 5v5 goals against…. Not a great showing by the Flames defence or by Daniel Vladar.
  • This type of game puts the Flames right into draft lottery conversation as if it’s any indication of the final 20 games of the season, it’s going to be painful watching their playoff chances continue to diminish.
