Flames Game Recaps

Flames Visual Recap 63: Calgary loses to Matthew Tkachuk for the first time ever

In the first game after the 2024 NHL Trade Deadline, the Calgary Flames paid a visit to some former Flames as they faced off against the Florida Panthers. Since being traded, Matthew Tkachuk and the Panthers haven’t been able to beat the Flames. Unfortunately, Calgary’s win streak over Florida of three games came to an end as the Panthers came out on top.

Notes and discussion from the charts are all below, read on to see it all!

Game events

  • This was a high-event game as both teams put up over 30 shots and and 35 hits each. These teams will be tied to one another for years, even decades to come with the Tkachuk and Jonathan Huberdeau/MacKenzie Weegar swap. If every game sees both teams being fired up, that’s a good thing.

  • Yegor Sharangovich scored again as his goal was the lone goal Calgary managed to get past Anthony Stolarz.
  • The Panthers potted five goals against Jacob Markstrom as he was less-than-stellar versus his former team.
  • Another former Flame in Sam Bennett scored against Calgary with Tkachuk assisting on that goal.

All situations Corsi

  • The Panthers had a larger share of shot attempts and their second period was by far the biggest difference-maker.
  • Calgary was steady but just couldn’t find ways to score.
  • This might have been one of Calgary’s best games in terms of getting shots from in front of the net. To only score one goal with that type of spread is highly unlucky.
  • Meanwhile, the Panthers scored three from in close on far fewer attempts in the slot.

5v5 Corsi

  • At 5v5, the Flames were chasing the game more than the Panthers. After Florida went up 4–1, they started to coast at even strength.
  • Calgary’s pushes were unfruitful as they couldn’t score at the end of the second period on a strong momentum swing, nor could they get anything going in the third.
  • No goals at 5v5 on a shot plot like this? Truly unlucky. Stolarz was lights out for the Panthers and the Flames could not solve him whatsoever.
  • The Panthers were fairly scattered in their 5v5 shot locations and weren’t actually that effective at getting high-danger shots off, which is the tiniest silver lining for Calgary’s defence that is now very different than it was two weeks ago.
