The Calgary Flames have claimed defenceman Joel Hanley off waivers from the Dallas Stars

After seeing their five-game winning streak come to an end, the Calgary Flames have made an acquisition via waivers. With the high chance Noah Hanifin is dealt before the 2024 NHL Trade deadline, the Flames have added a depth defenceman from the Dallas Stars.

Calgary Flames claim Joel Hanley on waivers

Hanley, 32, has 182 NHL games and 27 points to his name. The 5’11, 190 lbs Ontario product had brief stints with the Montreal Canadiens and the Arizona Coyotes, but has mostly featured with the Dallas Stars. For the past four seasons, Hanley has been Dallas’ sixth/seventh defenceman, getting in between 26 and 44 games per season. With the Stars’ addition of former Flames defenceman Chris Tanev last week, and the returns of Jani Hakanpaa and Nils Lundkvist from injury, Hanley was, unfortunately, the odd man out.

Hanley is signed through the 2024–25 season at an average annual value (AAV) of $787,500. Hanley is a left shot, but can play either side. This seems like a natural upgrade over Jordan Oesterle.

Per HockeyViz, Hanley has had positive defensive impacts in all of the nine NHL seasons he’s played in. That is very rare. This is certainly a player worthy of a waiver claim.

Hanley joins A.J. Greer and Brayden Pachal as waiver claims made by the Flames this season. Both have been good additions, so we can imagine the Flames like what they see in Hanley. The team has also lost Nick DeSimone and Adam Ruzicka via waivers earlier this year.
