Flames Game Recaps

Flames Visual Recap 54: Calgary falls flat against San Jose as Wolf faces hometown team

The Calgary Flames looked to turn things around after being shut out by the New York Rangers. They had a good chance to do so returning to the Sadldledome to face the 31st place San Jose Sharks. The team started Dustin Wolf but unfortunately, he didn’t play his best game against his hometown team.

Notes and discussion from the charts are all below, read on to see it all!

Game events

  • It was a high-event game with both teams putting up over 30 shots. Calgary would have gotten a lot more if it wasn’t for their 26 misses too.
  • A few too many giveaways were made by Calgary compared to the Sharks.
  • Both teams were racking up penalties in this one, but Calgary couldn’t score any on the man advantage

  • Nazem Kadri’s game-opening goal came early as he continues his great year with his rookie linemates.
  • Andrei Kuzmenko scored again for the Flames, and he’s now up to three goals in five games.
  • The Flames had brutal second and third periods as the Sharks pulled away with Filip Zadina picking up four points.

All situations Corsi

  • The Flames outshot the Sharks, but the two teams were fairly similar after the first period. Once the Sharks got ahead and score effects took over, the Flames pulled away but it was too little too late.
  • As mentioned, the Flames were fruitless on the power play and those four straight man advantages before San Jose got their first power play were all wasted.
  • The Flames were all over the offensive zone and had a strong share of high-danger shots.
  • The Sharks’ offence overall would look fairly pedestrian but they did score six times though, so it worked for them in this case.

5v5 Corsi

  • The game was hardly played at 5v5, and when it was, the Sharks were the better team. They got goals and didn’t allow the Flames to overtake them with momentum or anything. Penalties helped, but the Flames’ only 5v5 burst of offence came at the end of the game when it was too late.
  • It’s too bad the Flames lost this one as this 5v5 shot location chart has been one of their better ones. By no means is it an elite offence, but it’s on the right track.
