Jacob Markstrom named NHL first star of the week ending February 11, 2024

After a magnificent week, Calgary Flames goaltender Jacob Markstrom has been named the NHL’s first star of the week ending February 11, 2024.

This comes just days after Markstrom was named the NHLPA’s Player of the Week.

Leading the Flames’ surge back to the playoff picture

The Flames are on a heater, winning their past four games against difficult opponents, and looking dominant while doing it.

Markstrom put up three wins in which he saved a combined 93 shots, and only allowed six total goals. He finished the week with a 2.00 GAA and .939 SV%.

This elevated play from Markstrom has been instrumental in earning wins against Boston Bruins, New Jersey Devils, and New York Islanders last week, plus the Chicago Blackhawks just before the All-Star break.

The Flames now sit fourth in the Western Conference wild card race, three points out of the final playoff spot in the West.

Markstrom has been the Flames’ MVP

This is just one snapshot of what has been a phenomenal bounce-back season for Markstrom.

Overall this season, Markstrom has fought back to being a true elite goalie. Out of all goaltenders with at least 25 games played this season, Markstrom has the 10th most wins with 17, has the seventh-best save percentage at .915, and the 10th-best GAA at 2.54.

If Markstrom continues this level of play, the Flames will be a real threat to compete in the playoffs this season, and Markstrom may be due Vezina Trophy votes as well.
