Flames Visual Recap 52: Calgary takes down Islanders as Weegar scores first career hat trick

The Calgary Flames are clawing their way up the standings as they’re not going away without a fight. The Flames got a huge result against the New York Islanders as a couple of players now lead the league in major offensive stats.

Notes and discussion from the charts are all below, read on to see it all!

Game events

  • The Flames were held to just 24 shots but scored five goals. On the other hand, the Islanders had a much bigger share of shots but were hardly able to solve Jacob Markstrom.
  • Had Markstrom not gone for the goalie goal with the Islanders’ net empty, he might have ended the game with just one goal against.

  • As mentioned, the scoreboard shows a couple of lead-leading results:
  • MacKenzie Weegar’s hat trick was huge for the Flames as he got the team on the scoreboard, got the game-winner, and got the insurance goal. His 15 goals on the season put him in sole possession of first among all NHL defencemen with a two-goal cushion.
  • Markstrom’s assist on Weegar’s first goal was his fourth of the season. His four assists put him in sole possession of first among all NHL goalies with a two-assist cushion.
  • Jonathan Huberdeau’s two points equate to him playing at a point-per-game pace over his past 16.

All situations Corsi

  • The Flames were ahead in Corsi for most of the game, but the Islanders tried to rally back at the end of the game to no avail.
  • Calgary didn’t have too many shot attempts at all in the third period, but they got two empty-net goals when they needed the insurance goals.
  • Calgary’s offence was not actually all that great. Almost no chances were from within the slot.
  • In contrast, the Flames’ defence was porous as they allowed many high-danger chances against. Thankfully for them, Markstrom was up to the task.

5v5 Corsi

  • The Flames held an edge at 5v5 for most of the game. Score effects towards the end turned the shot attempts share in the Islanders’ favour, but the Flames were more or less cruising toward the final buzzer by then.
  • Calgary’s 5v5 shot spread was extremely sparse. Not a great showing for them in terms of adhering to offensive systems, but they got the job done.
  • The Islanders tended to shoot from the right side much more frequently, but not a single goal came from their efforts from that side.
