Flames Game Recaps

Flames Visual Recap 51: Calgary takes down New Jersey as Markstrom stands tall

The Calgary Flames continued their Eastern Conference road trip and looked to claw their way back into the wild card race with their new-look roster. In facing the New Jersey Devils, they were tasked with playing against Tyler Toffoli and a returning Jack Hughes as well. The Flames got the job done and are now one point out of the wild card spot.

Notes and discussion from the charts are all below, read on to see it all!

Game events

  • It’s not often the Flames get outshot by a 10-shot margin, especially not after putting up 30 shots themselves. But that’s what happened but thankfully Jacob Markstrom was solid in net.

  • Andrei Kuzmenko scored again to make it two in two games with the Flames.
  • Kevin Rooney scored his first goal as a Flame in his second game back!
  • The five-goal third period made for some major drama, including a weird play with Vitek Vanecek vacating his net to play the puck by the boards, the Flames scoring on the ensuing chaos, only for it to not count.

All situations Corsi

  • The game was largely back and forth as the two teams were fairly close in terms of shot attempts.
  • The trailing Devils picked it up in the third period after their shorthanded goal, but the Flames were able to hang on for the win.
  • Calgary didn’t get too many overall shots off in the slot, but they did convert on several chances.
  • Two goals from the crease came on heads-up plays as Zary’s goal came from him quickly pouncing on a loose puck that trickled past Vanecek, while Rooney’s goal was a tenacious play in the crease that was rewarded.

5v5 Corsi

  • At 5v5, things were again quite even for the two teams.
  • It’s kind of interesting to see the lulls the Flames had: slow start in the first period, cruised a bit in the second period after they scored, and didn’t get anything at all after their fourth goal.
  • All in all, four 5v5 goals are a solid outcome at any time.
  • The Flames could have cleaned up their defence a bit more though, as they gave New Jersey a good share of high-danger chances.
