Calgary Flames Prospect Roundup: Big week for WHL prospects, Wranglers split their games

The Calgary Flames are off this week for both their bye week as well as the upcoming 2024 NHL All-Star Game, but the prospects are very much still playing. The Calgary Wranglers scored three goals in a win and allowed three goals in a loss to go 1–1–0.

Outside of the AHL, the Flames saw immense production from their WHL prospects. All three of their prospects had at least one goal and saw their totals rise.

For those looking to see if Jake Boltmann scored, the answer is exactly what you think it is (but it’s really not his fault).

Let’s break it all down.

Welcome to the TWC Calgary Flames prospect update. Each week, we’ll take a dive into how the Flames’ prospects have done in their respective leagues. We have defined a prospect as a skater who has played fewer than 65 NHL games and is younger than 25 years of age. All data is from QuantHockey and EliteProspects. We also use an NHLe calculator built by Christian Roatis (@Croatis) which is used to estimate a player’s equivalent point total in the NHL based on how they are performing in their respective league. The calculator uses the difficulty of the given league combined with the ease at which a player puts up points to determine the NHLe.

Flames prospect happenings

AHL

  • The Calgary Wranglers went 1–1–0 this week, losing 3–0 to the San Jose Barracuda, then beating the Northern California side by a 3–2 count.
  • Dustin Wolf was in net for both games and saw his stats remain about the same on the week. He still is the second-best goalie in the entire AHL and will be an AHL All-Star next week.
  • Not really a prospect anymore, Jakob Pelletier scored for the Wranglers this weekend in his second game with the team since coming back from shoulder surgery. Expect him in Calgary as early as next week.
  • With the Flames off this week, they have sent Adam Klapka, Matt Coronato, and Cole Schwindt back down to the AHL for both ice time and salary cap reasons.
  • Ilya Solovyov had a goal and an assist this week for the Wranglers as well. He is quietly turning into one heck of a player, and an exceptional find in the seventh round for the Flames.
  • Some really good news for Wranglers fans: Jeremie Poirier posted a video of himself practicing on the ice in Calgary, hinting that his return is imminent.

BCHL

  • One goal this week for the Cade Littler in the BCHL.

ECHL

  • Wow, so empty here! It’s probably a good sign that none of the Flames prospects are playing in the ECHL.

Europe

  • Two goals, an assist, and a bucket of penalty minutes for Topi Ronni.
  • Another big week for Yegor Yegorov in the MHL. He sits eighth in the league in save percentage.

NCAA

  • No games for most of the Flames’ NCAA prospects this week.
  • This means that no, Jake Boltmann didn’t score this week, but Notre Dame also didn’t play. We’ll give him a pass this week.
  • Arseni Sergeev put up another big week and is one of the best netminders in the league so far this season but has only played nine games.

QMJHL

  • A goal and two assists for Etienne Morin this week for Moncton, including this one:
  • However, he was out of the lineup in last night’s matchup against Acadie Bathurst.

WHL

  • A huge week for the Flames’ WHL prospects, who all put points on the board.
  • Jaden Lipinski had two goals and two assists, snapping a bit of a dry spell. Four points put him just about to a point-per-game pace. Take a look at his one goal, assisted by Samuel Honzek:
  • Speaking of Honzek, the forward had two goals and two assists for the Giants. He and Lipinski have been linemates for the past few games and have looked very good together.
  • Another goal this week for Parker Bell in Tri-City. Great to see!

NHLe Leaderboard
